On 9th August 2006 the British cruise ships QUEEN MARY 2 and ORIANA visited Lisbon together and although berthed in different terminals, the QE2 came close to the P&O ship while departing, giving way to a symphony of whistle salutes in the best tradition of ships and the sea.

GRAND VICTORIA ex-RENAISSANCE in Lisbon

The GRAND VICTORIA photographed in Lisbon on 22-08-2006 by L. M. Correia
The veteran cruise ship GRAND VICTORIA, owned by Elysian Cruises and first introduced in 1966 by Paquet Cruises of France as their sleek RENAISSANCE, visited Lisbon for the second time under her current name.
One of the survivors of the once large fleet of Greek cruise operators Epirotiki Lines and Royal Olympic (she belonged to Epirotiki and ROC between 1977 and 2005, with a period of three years cruising in Indonesia as the AWANI DREAM), the GRAND VICTORIA still looks very atractive and elegant...

Ex-HADAG ferries still going strong in Lisbon

When in 1977 the HADAG ferry VOLKSDORF moved from the river Elbe to the Tagus, she became the MARVILA and has sailed back and forth over the river banks ever since. By now she is one of four ex-German ferries still in service in Lisbon.
Her former running mates PORTO BRANDÃO, VOUGA and CASTELO are no longer in service, but the MOURARIA, S. PAULUS and TRAFARIA PRAIA are still active showing her clear strong German lines to its best.
The MARVILA ex-VOLKSDORF is employed on the Belém to Porto Brandão and Trafaria ferry service and despite her 50 years - she built in Hamburg in 1956, she is still going strong...

CLASSIC SAGAs

The SAGA ROSE and her fleetmate SAGA RUBY are also extremely interesting classic ships. Built in 1965 and 1973 for the Norwegian America Line, they belonged to Cunard for a long time and have both joined another owner more recently, the Saga Group.
I was very happy to fly to Madeira in January in order to photograph them together. They will be together again in Lisbon next January 4th, and once more in Madeira on January 11th... In their present form the Saga livery fits very well to their original classic lines. And I have always enjoyed yellow funnels....

SS OCEANIC - CLASSIC BEAUTY OF THE SIXTIES

With the former FRANCE now joining the list of illustrious passenger ships of the past, the few still active classic liners of the sixties should get all our attention. One such ships, and the last great Italian-built express liner (turned into a cruise liner from the very begining) of the sixties and the more successful of them all is the OCEANIC built in Monfalcone for Home Lines and still in steam in the Med based in Barcelona and operated by Pullmantur Cruises. Here it is a nice view of her taken in Villefranche on 25the April 2006.
The former FRANCE should have been just perfect to have returned to the Mediterranean as a Marseilles-based cruise ship doing for the French market what the OCEANIC did perform in Spain: create a growing new cruise market. And the FRANCE could sail on a 7-day itinerary for a few years to come, but it was no to be so... The second photo shows the OCEANIC at La Goullete, Tunis in late April 2006.

TRIBUTE to the FRANCE / NORWAY / BLUE LADY

A tribute to one of the most remarkable passenger ships ever built: the FRANCE of 1962 that as the BLUE LADY has reached the very end of a long and successful career at the scrappers beach of doom in Alang, India.

LISBON LINERS AUGUST 1971

The Italian liners EUGENIO C and GALILEO GALILEI in Lisbon in the early seventies
The 43 ships listed below made 81 calls to Lisbon in August 1971, 35 years ago. Many of the calls were cruises, but there were still many ships operating liner voyages to South America or África, and there were also the Portuguese troopers.
ALFREDO DA SILVA, AMÉLIA DE MELLO, ANCERVILLE, ANGOLA, ANGRA DO HEROISMO, ARGENTINA STAR, ARGONAUT, AUGUSTUS, BRASIL STAR, CABO SAN ROQUE, CANBERRA, CHUSAN, CRISTOFORO COLOMBO, EAGLE, ELLINIS, EUGENIO C, FAIRSKY, FEDERICO C, FUNCHAL, GALILEO GALILEI, GIULIO CESARE, INFANTE DOM HENRIQUE, LEONARDO DA VINCI, MANUEL ALFREDO, MICHELANGELO, MOÇAMBIQUE, MONTSERRAT, NEVASA, NILI, NORTHERN STAR, ORCADES, ORIANA, PASTEUR, PÁTRIA, PRINCIPE PERFEITO, REINA DEL MAR, RITA MARIA, SANTA MARIA, SOUTHERN CROSS, UGANDA, UIGE, URUGUAY STAR, VERA CRUZ.
Looking at the EUGENIO C at the time, she docked in Lisbon 3 times: on 1st August, (18h00 to 24h00) from Genoa to Rio de Janeiro, by 21st August she was back (12h00 /22h00) on her way to the Med, only to return to Lisbon once more on 27th August (18h00 / 24h00) for another fast crossing to Rio.
Concerning the Portuguese ships, the PRINCIPE PERFEITO arrived on 14th August from her classic August cruise to the Med, while the AMÉLIA DE MELLO completed her final voyage from Angola and Cape Verde. Words and copyright photos by L. M. Correia - 2006

PAQUETES EM LISBOA EM AGOSTO DE HÁ 35 ANOS

O CABO DE SAN ROQUE, da Companhia Ybarra, de Sevilha em Lisboa
Ybarra liner CABO SAN ROQUE at Lisbon

ALFREDO DA SILVA, AMÉLIA DE MELLO, ANCERVILLE, ANGOLA, ANGRA DO HEROISMO, ARGENTINA STAR, ARGONAUT, AUGUSTUS, BRASIL STAR, CABO SAN ROQUE, CANBERRA, CHUSAN, CRISTOFORO COLOMBO, EAGLE, ELLINIS, EUGENIO C, FAIRSKY, FEDERICO C, FUNCHAL, GALILEO GALILEI, GIULIO CESARE, INFANTE DOM HENRIQUE, LEONARDO DA VINCI, MANUEL ALFREDO, MICHELANGELO, MOÇAMBIQUE, MONTSERRAT, NEVASA, NILI, NORTHERN STAR, ORCADES, ORIANA, PASTEUR, PÁTRIA, PRINCIPE PERFEITO, REINA DEL MAR, RITA MARIA, SANTA MARIA, SOUTHERN CROSS, UGANDA, UIGE, URUGUAY STAR, VERA CRUZ.

KWANZA TOUR I ex-TUNES

The former Portuguese passenger ferry TUNES (893 grt / built 1978) sold last year by Soflusa to undisclosed Angolan interests was photographed on 22 July at the NavalRocha shipyard, in Lisbon, under new name and registry, as the Panamian KWANZA TOUR I. This name suggests future coastal cruising activities in Angola.
The TUNES was one of the two final CP - Portuguese Railways ferries, built in São Jacinto in 1978 for the Lisboa - Barreiro ferry service, she operated until May 2004, when she was withdrawn and laid up at Seixal. Following sale, the TUNES was towed across the river Tagus to the NavalRocha shipyard last December for a refit and drydock that is now nearing completion.

500th ANNIVERSARY OF THE CITY OF FUNCHAL

Funchal, the capital city of Madeira Island is set to commemorate five centuries of existence as a city in August 2008, with a Sea Festival with a Tall Ships Regatta. The return of the Portuguese passenger liner FUNCHAL on a special voyage repeating her 1961 original itinerary out of Lisbon with calls in Madeira, St. Michael's, Terceira and Fayal islands was also planned but after all it seems it is not going to take place.
The sailing regatta is set to depart from Falmouth in September 2008 and the ships are expected to arrive in Madeira at about 25th September after a call at Ilhavo, Aveiro.
Funchal was the first overseas city of the Portuguese Discoveries period and is now a thriving and bustling city keeping traditions and maritime history side by side with modernity. In 2005 its port became the first cruise port in Portugal, ahead of Lisbon.

PORTUGUESE PASSENGER LINERS AT THE LISBON MARITIME MUSEUM

The launching of the former Portuguese flagship INFANTE DOM HENRIQUE in 1960 at Hoboken, near Antwerp (Copyright photograph from the Luís Miguel Correia collection)

Portugal is by tradition one of the oldest maritime countries in Europe and the Lisbon Maritime Museum shows that tradition to a level of excellence.
One of the proudest chapters of contemporary Portuguese maritime history deals with the countries' passenger ship fleet.
An exhibition dedicated to the Portuguese passenger liners of the past has just opened at the Lisbon Maritime Museum. It covers the history of those great ships over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, from the first steamers to the large express liners of the nineteen sixties and includes photographs, memorabilia and furniture from the ships, models, etc...
A must for those interested in the subject, so perhaps now it is time for a visit to Lisbon and its maritime museum.
