R.M.S. ALCANTARA (1927-1958)

Navio de passageiros inglês R.M.S. ALCANTARA (1927-1958), da famosa companhia Royal Mail Lines, fotografado em Southampton, após a Segunda Guerra Mundial, quando operou, em conjunto com o R.M.S. ANDES (1939-1971), na carreira da América do Sul (Brasil, Uruguai e Argentina), serviço iniciado em 1851 e que terminou em 1969. 

O ALCANTARA era um visitante assíduo do Porto de Lisboa. Construído em Belfast, em 1925-1927, foi desmantelado no Japão em 1958 com o nome KAISHO MARU.

Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, o ALCANTARA foi adaptado a cruzador auxiliar em 1939, quando a chaminé da frente foi retirada. A 28 de julho de 1940, combateu contra o cruzador auxiliar alemão THOR, no Atlântico Sul, tendo sofrido avarias graves, após o que entrou no Rio de Janeiro para fazer as reparações necessárias. Em 1944 passou a navegar como transporte de tropas e em 1947-48 foi reconstruído no estaleiro Harland & Wolff, tendo regressado à linha da América do Sul em 8 de outubro de 1948. Era gémeo do R.M.S. ASTURIAS (1926-1957), sendo fácil identificar os dois navios pelas posições distintas do "cesto da gávea", mais alta no ASTURIAS.

Lancha turística BEIRINHA mais colorida

O barco de passageiros português BEIRINHA, que se vem dedicando a passeios turísticos no rio Tejo desde 2023, acaba de mudar de visual, com a pintura do casco inspirada no rei dos mares, Neptuno, ou Poseidon, ou talvez o nosso tão camoniano Adamastor. O BEIRINHA é operado pela firma Pacifico Cruises e tem base na Doca do Turismo de Lisboa, anteriormente conhecida como Doca da Marinha e, originalmente, Doca da Alfândega.

LISBON one of the most spectacular ports to sail into Europe

"Lisbon, in my opinion, is one of the most spectacular ports to sail into in Europe. Alongside Venice and Valletta it is one of my favourites, though admittedly less challenging. The pilot boards just off of the symbolic Belem Tower, before you sail past the statue of Henry the Navigator, and under the 25th April Bridge with the statue of Christ looking down from the Southern Bank. Then its just a case of making a wide turn using the breadth of the Tagus and allowing for the strong tidal currents, before docking at the Alcantara Passenger Terminal in the shadow of the Bridge that draws comparisons to the San Francisco Bridge in its visual impact.
