O cargueiro DRAMMENSFJORD da Norwegian America Line

No tempo em que os animais falavam e os navios quase o faziam também, era facílimo distinguir as unidades das principais empresas de navegação e países de origem respectivos pelo seu aspecto e cores. Um belo exemplo dessa época é o navio de carga geral norueguês DRAMMENSFJORD, construído em 1955 na Suécia para a Norwegian America Line (NAL), de Oslo, um bonito cargueiro de linhas muito elegantes, cores finas e equilibradas, com aspecto tipicamente escandinavo. Com 129 metros de comprimento de fora-a-fora e 3812 TAB, o DRAMMENSFJORD tinha 6400 toneladas de porte bruto e 14 nós de velocidade. Embora a NAL fosse mais conhecida pelos seus navios de passageiros e cruzeiros, a sua frota compunha-se também de um número considerável de navios de carga geral que faziam a carreira da América e ainda viagens para a África Oriental. O DRAMMENSFJORD, aqui fotografado no Canal da Mancha a partir de um dos aviões da Skyfotos, serviu a Norwegian America até 1974, quando foi vendido a interesses gregos e mudou o nome para PISTIS. Em Outubro de 1977 foi imobilizado em Luanda e por lá ficou. Pensa-se que terá sido desmantelado em 1980, o certo é que foi abatido ao registo do Lloyd´s em 1995.

Both ships sail under the Saga houseflag now, as SAGA SAPPHIRE and SAGA RUBY...

VISTAFJORD in Lisbon 1986

The VISTAFJORD photographed in Lisbon on 19 September 1986 berthed at the Rocha Passenger Ship Terminal.

She had already been sold by Norwegian America and spotted the Cunard funnel colours and a gray hull.

She was on the around Europe cruise back into the Med after another season in Northern waters.

SAGAFJORD de 1965

Postais da minha colecção editados pela Norwegian America Line alusivos ao paquete SAGAFJORD, construído em 1965 em França e um dos mais elegantes navios de passageiros da década de sessenta.
O primeiro postal, reprodução de uma pintura artística foi a minha visão inicial do navio em 1966, quando o obtive durante umas férias na Madeira.
Só anos mais tarde o vi ao vivo atracado no Tejo. Este postal fazia lembrar o do nosso SANTA MARIA e de facto ambos os navios tinham algumas semelhanças, ambos do tipo 20-20-20, mas com muitos aspectos distintos, o mais importante dos quais foi o navio português ter sido deitado para o lixo quase novo, pois foi vendido para a sucata com apenas 19 anos de utilização e em perfeito estado de conservação enquanto o norueguês durou até agora, estando a fazer o último cruzeiro ao Mediterrâneo com o nome SAGA ROSE, 44 anos depois de ter entrado ao serviço...

Outbound timeless beauty

SAGA ROSE farewell departure from Lisbon was a very special moment for any person interested in ships or simply someone with a keen interest on beautiful creatures.
SAGA ROSE sailed full of life and lights as an outbound timeless beauty. A very different ship from the brand new Norwegian flagship I used to see in the late nineteen sixties when operating long exclusive cruises from New York.
Forty years later she has reached the end of her cruising life after a long and happy career under three names but still shows the same allure from the more famous liners from the sixties. Let's hope her afterlife post-Saga Cruises will still preserve her dignity...
There are here two more photos taken on 27 October 2009 in Lisbon. I spent the day on the ship and took 1254 photos including her interiors, decks, the funnel and many other aspects of the timeless SAGA of 1965.

SAGAFJORD in Lisbon in 1975

The Norwegian America Line cruise ship SAGAFJORD of 1965 photographed in Lisbon in 1975 while cruising from New York, still in her original looks with buff mast.
SAGAFJORD is one of my favorite ships and I have been very lucky to have photographed her several times in original form as well as after modernization, in Cunard livery, as
GRIPSHOLM and as
SAGA ROSE.
All good things come to an end and this ship will be withdrawn from service next December thanks to the new SOLAS 2010.
In my memorabilia collection I have the NAL original card "compliments" sent by the company with information and photos of their ships.
This is one of my earliest photos taken in 1975 with a Olympus camera. Although I actually did my first photos in July 1970 it took until February 1975 to have a good camera... The boxes seen in the terminal were "steamer trunks" disembarked from the INFANTE DOM HENRIQUE then on her final voyages bringing back home Portuguese Africa refugees due to the independence of Angola, Mozambique, etc...

VISTAFJORD em Lisboa 1976-01-03

Paquete norueguês VISTAFJORD (24.292 GT, construído em 1973), fotografado junto à Estação Marítima de Alcântara a 3 de Janeiro de 1976, há exactamente 33 anos, durante a escala em Lisboa incluída no cruzeiro de Natal e Fim de Ano.
O VISTAFJORD foi o último paquete construído para a famosa companhia Norwegian America Line, de Oslo, apresentando-se na imagem com o aspecto original e um pinheiro no topo do mastro.
O VISTAFJORD fez a primeira escal em Lisboa a 22 de Setembro de 1973, tendo atracado a Alcântara. O navio passou a chamar-se CARONIA em 1999 e navega desde Novembro de 2004 com o nome SAGA RUBY.
