QE2 final cruises

Passengers of the QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 enjoying the late October afternoon sun in Lisbon yesterday, 29 October 2008 when the famous QE2 paid her pre final call to Lisbon on her way to the Mediterranean on the last cruise from Southampton. The next departure from QE2 home port will have no return.
She will be missed in the Tagus and the rumours about what the new Dubai owners plan to do once she is delivered are disturbing.

The most beautiful shop on the high seas

The BOOKSHOP on board the classic RMS QUEEN ELIZABETH 2, my favorite shop on the high seas since I first purchased books there in 1989.

LMC Books on the QE2

When I first saw the QE2 in Lisbon on 28 April 1969 I hardly knew that one day I would do a book on her with Bill Miller.
Photos: LMC books on display at the QE2 bookshop and LMC signing books on board on a photo taken by Raquel Sabino Pereira, whose photographic skills are second to none.

Looking into the QE2

The beautiful Cunarder RMS QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 visited Lisbon again on 14 August 2008, so now we have only three more calls including the farewell on 13 November 2008.
She will return to Lisbon on 29 August, 29 October and 13 November, closing a special relationship between the QE2 and Lisbon started on 28 April 1969 on her maiden call while on the shake down cruise prior to the maiden transatlantic voyage to NY...
At the time she looked a very attractive girl with her original slim white funnel. Now it is almost over and I can't find Sam to to ask
"Play it again, Sam, play it again..."

Countdown for QE2

Now that the great Lady is on her final countdown relative to Cunard service, the QE2 calls in Lisbon are even more special moments. CUNARD FESTIVAL in Southampton

On 22nd April 2008 the three Cunard QUEENS in active service met at Southampton for the first time.
While the QE2 was doing her final refit prior to delivery to Dubai in November, the QM2 was sailing for New York while the newest fleet member QUEEN VICTORIA was about to sail on a cruise.
In the end it was the perfect setting for a public relations action...
And the ships are really beautiful in traditional Cunard livery...
There will be three QUEENS again in 2010 when the new QUEEN ELIZABETH enters service...

SEMPRE A ODE MARÍTIMA

Roçando pelas cordas, descendo as escadas incómodas,
Dão a mesma saudade e a mesma ânsia doutra maneira.

LISBON QUEEN

Not the QUEEN OF LISBON, but an amazing QUEEN IN LISBON.
The R.M.S. QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 has called in Lisbon countless times since 28th April 1969 when I first saw her alongside the Rocha cruise terminal dressed with flags and the original white funnel, while on her shakedown cruise.
Beautiful QE2. Photos taken in Lisbon on her last call on 2nd September 2007.
