A Cidade dos Navios

Lisboa é por vocação natural a cidade dos navios, pois as suas características marítimas e portuárias tornam os navios personagens privilegiadas desta capital atlântica de maritimidades momentaneamente esquecidas.

Os navios todos os dias renovam as faces da cidade-porto.

O porto tem sofrido renovações profundas nos últimos anos em resposta às mudanças radicais dos transportes marítimos, com uma especialização crescente a partir da década de 1960. Os passageiros continuam a chegar ao Tejo a bordo de grandes navios, mas hoje são principalmente estrangeiros e turistas.

Os navios, a cidade, o porto e a luz inconfundível do Tejo que tornam diferentes cada local em cada momento são a chave da magia marítima de Lisboa.

HOLLAND AMERICA back in home waters

Holland America cruise ships RYNDAM and ROTTERDAM leaving their "home port" of Rotterdam on 26 June 2011 on a nostalgic photography by Hans Hoffmann.

ROTTERDAM was departing on the transatlantic round voyage to New York comemorative to the 40 years of the final Holand America season on the Roterdam - New York regular passenger service then maintained with the NIEUW AMSTERDAM of 1938.

It was anounced recently that ROTTERDAM will be based in Roterdam year-round as of the Fall of 2012. The ship will operate a series of unique cruises geared specially to the Dutch cruise market now totalling 76.000 pax, but seen as with great potential for a steady growth. ROTTERDAM will sal from Rotterdam on a great 90-day cruise to Indonesia, a 35-day cruise to the Caribbean including calls in Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao, the Dutch Antilles isles, as well as cruises to the Atlantic islands, Iberia and the Mediterranean, very much in the same way P&O operates from Southampton.

O regresso da Holland America a Roterdão

A Holland America anunciou recentemente que o seu paquete ROTTERDAM vai ficar baseado permanentemente em Roterdão a partir do Outono de 2012 com um programa de cruzeiros especificamente dirigido ao mercado holandês e europeu, um pouco à semelhança da operação da P&O a partir de Southampton.

Trata-se de um regresso às origens pois embora a Holland America pertença desde 1987 ao Grupo Carnival e tenha actualmente a sua sede em Seattle, EUA, a origem da empresa é holandesa. Constituída em 1871, a Holland America é actualmente uma das mais antigas companhias de navegação do mundo. Durante um século a sua função principal foi a navegação transatlântica, de passageiros e carga, tendo terminado a carreira regular de passageiros entre Roterdão e Nova Iorque em 1971 passando a dedicar-se em exclusivo a cruzeiros. Ao contrário de muitas outras companhias tradicionais, em 1971 a HAL optou por desenvolver a frota de navios de passageiros e os cruzeiros, abandonando o transporte de cargas. A companhia italiana Costa fez o mesmo na década de 1980 e foram ambas apostas ganhas.

Para além das ligações históricas e culturais óbvias, o regresso da Holland America ao país de origem surge como uma aposta no desenvolvimento do mercado de cruzeiros holandês, que de momento se cifra em 76.000 passageiros anuais e mostra grande potencial de crescimento. A ideia é apostar na sensibilização de novos passageiros oferecendo um produto de grande qualidade especifico para os interesses e gostos dos holandeses em vez de tentar captar passageiros às companhias concorrentes. A companhia acaba de completar duas viagens transatlânticas a Nova Iorque com grande sucesso, numa operação idêntica à da Cunard com o QUEEN MARY 2, e para 2012 e 2013 estão programados grandes cruzeiros com o ROTTERDAM incluindo uma viagem de 90 dias à Indonésia e um cruzeiro de 35 dias às Antilhas com escalas nas ilhas ABC - Aruba, Bonaire e Curaçau, de origem holandesas. O ROTTERDAM vai igualmente operar a partir de Roterdão em viagens a Portugal, Ilhas Atlânticas e Mediterrâneo, beneficiando os portos portugueses com mais escalas.

Eight cruise ships in Lisbon 20 April 2008

Two ships shared the Alcântara Terminal: the ROTTERDAM and the WIND SURF. Another pair of ships docked at the Santa Apolónia Terminal, the AZAMARA JOURNEY on her first visit under her new name and the SEA CLOUD II, while the OCEAN MONARCH was nearby undergoing her extensive refit. Eight cruise ships could be seen in Lisbon on Sunday 20 April 2008...

The ROTTERDAM in Lisbon
