The Ferry VLADIMIR NAZOR

While cruising on the Adriatic recently, I was able to photograph twice the Croatian ferry VLADIMIR NAZOR of Jadrolinija.
Here she is inward bound, passing my ship outside the entrance to Ploce, Croatia on 23 September 2010.
The VLADIMIR NAZOR was constructed in Yoguslavia by the Titovo shipyard in Kraljevica (Yard n. 444). She was delivered in 1986 to Jadrolinija and has been operating on domestic ferry services ever since. In 1991 she was transferred to the registry of Croatia.

VLADIMIR NAZOR main particulars: IMO no. 8108406. GT: 1.686, 1.125 Nett tons. Dimensions: 86,59 x 14,51 x 3,01 m. Engines: 2 B&W diesl engines, 1.620 kW, 13 knots service speed. Capacity for 450 passengers and 80 cars.

PASCOLI in Civitavecchia

The beautiful PASCOLI at her berth in the Port of Civitavecchia in October 1986. One of eight similar ferries with 7.000 GRT and capacity for 1000 passenger that served Tirrenia on the Tirrenian Sea links to Sardinia and Sicilia.

VERGA and PASCOLI in Civitavecchia

The handsome Italian sisterships VERGA (1978-1997) and PASCOLI (1971-1999) berthed in Civitavecchia in October 1986.
In the 1970s the Finmare Group Ferry company Tirrenia had eight sisters built in two groups.
PASCOLI (6.909 GRT) belonged to the original group which also comprised BOCCACCIO, CARDUCCI, LEOPARDI, MANZONI and PETRARCA, while VERGA belonged to the later group with DELLEDA.
They were very nice ships with elegant hulls and funnels. Some were rebuilt and lost all her elegance and balance...
VERGA served Tirrenia from 1978 up to her sale in 1997 to G.A. Ferries of Piraeus who renamed her DIMITROULA. Slightly rebuilt, still bearing her Italian good looking, she has been laid up in Piraeus since 2008.
PASCOLI was built in 1971 in Palermo and rebuilt in 1992 at La Spezia. In 1999 she was sold to Egipt and renamed EL SALAM PASCOLI 96 (1999-2000), TERTIUM MILLENIUM (2000), PASCOLI 96 (2000), AL SALAM PASCOLI 96 (2001-2006) ending at the beach in Alang as PASCOLI 96 on 25 July 2006.

Italian train ferries: TYRSUS (1961-1994)

Being a Southern European, what I really enjoy is the lure of sunny shipping spots in blue and azure waters, and there are no better such places anywhere other than the Mediterranean.
In 1986 I did my first photographic foray into the Med and two days at the end of the pier in Civitavecchia produced several boxes of magnificent Kodachrome 25 slides as well as several colour and B&W negatives. The highlight of my stay in Civitavecchia was the opportunity to see and photograph the Ferrovie de lo Stato train ferries used on the regular Civitavecchia - Golfo Aranci route.
Those ships were in fact mini liners with all hadsome design particulars expected on Italian ships...
The oldest ship in service on that October 1986 was the TYRSUS whose photo I am pleased to share today with fellow ship enthusiasts. She was a product of the Palermo C.N. Riuniti (yard nº. 221).TYRSUS main particulars were as follows: Gross tonnage - 4.447 GRT, 119,87 m long, 17,79 m wide, 2 diesel Fiat engines with an output of 5.968 kW gave her a service speed of 16 knots. TYRUS was certified to carry 905 passengers and had space for 385 lane meters. She was introduced on the Civitavecchia - Sardinia service on 1 October 1961 and this was her daily routine for more than 30 years. In 1994 she was sold to Plurimar, registered in Malta as AQUILA PRIMA and operated on the Adriatic. However she soon reverted to the original name in 1994, becoming DUBA 94 in 1995 and EL SALAM EL SAUDI in 1996 for Red Sea service. This did not last due to serious engine trouble and TYRSUS final years were spent laid up in Port Said. In 2002 she was renamed again, as VEESHAM III and on 8 March 2005 arrived at Alang to be broken up.
I have returned many other times to Civitavecchia but those were the days for free shipspotting, one could go everywhere, jump on top of the breakwaters, photograph all the floating beauty... I was there again last year, and must say only that there was trouble even for taking a picture of my own ship near the gangway - signs of a new dark age...

EXPRESS SANTORINI NO PIREU

The Greek passenger Ro-Ro ferry EXPRESS SANTORINI photographed departing from the port of Piraeus in October 2001 in the livery of Hellas Ferries.
Later the EXPRESS SANTORINI became very popular in the Azores Isles for her summer charters, and she is operating for ATLANTICOLINE for the third consecutive year.

SPANISH MAILSHIPS

Two photos of the TRASMEDITERRANEA mailship CIUDAD DE BADAJOZ arriving at Palma de Mallorca on 10 June 1991, still in the company's original livery. Note the signals mast above the bridge showing the influence from the design of the mast of QUEEN ELIZABETH 2.
Spanish passenger ships were very interesting and those classed as mailships had a special national ensign with the letters C M meaning Correo Maritimo - Sea Mail. This flag is still in use.
The history and fate of this particular ship, built in Valencia in 1979 can be seen here. She was broken up in 2008 but her demise passed almost unnoticed.
