Former SITMAR ships in Madeira

This curious photograph kindly sent from Funchal by Captain Duarte Chaves Correia captured the two final ships laid down for the long gone SITMAR Cruises. It was taken in Funchal, Madeira Island, on 1 May 2009 and shows OCEAN VILLAGE, ex-ARCADIA, ex-STAR PRINCESS, laid down in May 1988 in St Nazaire as SITMAR FAIRMAJESTY, and the ATLANTIC STAR, built also in France, but at La Seine, for SITMAR as the FAIRSKY of 1984 - the last steam turbine passenger ship to have been built.
In September 1988 SITMAR was taken over by Princess Cruises and so the SITMAR FAIRMAJESTY was delivered in May 1989 as STAR PRINCESS, and by then the FAIRSKY had been renamed SKY PRINCESS under Princess Cruises management.

ATLANTIC STAR sailing from Lisbon 2009-06-11

Two shots of the cruises ship ATLANTIC STAR on her final departure from Lisbon on 11 June 2009 following a short deployment for 7-day cruises to North Africa and the Atlantic Isles with departures from Lisbon on Sundays.
The ship sailed for Malaga. We hope to see the ATLANTIC STAR cruising from Lisbon again in the future...

ATLANTIC STAR deixou Lisboa

ATLANTIC STAR largando de Lisboa a 11 de Junho pela última vez após uma curta temporada de cruzeiros às Ilhas Atlânticas a partir de Lisboa. O navio seguiu vazio para Málaga após 12 dias estacionado em Lisboa.
Esperamos voltar a ver o ATLANTIC STAR a operar em Lisboa no futuro.

ATLANTIC STAR sai de Lisboa amanhã

O navio de cruzeiros ATLANTIC STAR que está imobilizado em Lisboa desde 31 de Maio após ter sido substituído pelo PACIFIC DREAM nos cruzeiros semana da Pullmantur larga do Tejo amanhã, 11 de Junho pelas 13h30 da tarde, rumo a Málaga, de onde depois segue para o Brasil.
O navio está atracado em Santa Apolónia desde 7 de Junho.

Beautiful red funnel

Two views of ATLANTIC STAR seen at the Rocha Cruise Ship Terminal, Lisbon, on 1 June 2009, where the ship is berthed for a short period of lay up following her replacement by fleet mate PACIFIC DREAM on 31 JMay 2009.
She departs for Brazil on 11 June. Meanwhile we can photograph and enjoy her fine conservative SITMAR-style lines and the beautiful funnel in fantastic bright red. Much better than the usual whites and blues with meanningless logos.

ATLANTIC STAR TO OPERATE IN BRAZIL

The cruise steamship ATLANTIC STAR is not set to be laid up in Marseilles after further employment was found for her in Brazilian waters on a joint operation by CVC Cruises and Pullmantur. The more classic ship in Pullmantur's fleet departed yesterday 24 May on her final cruise from Lisbon and will be replaced on 31 May by more modern fleet mate PACIFIC DREAM.
ATLANTIC STAR sails from Lisbon on a positioning transatlantic voyage for Recife on 7 June 2009 and starts a new series of cruises from Santos on 1 July. The new schedule includes a long series of 7-day cruises along the Brazilian coast with Saturday departures from Santos and Sunday departures from Rio de Janeiro, calling also at Vitória and Salvador.
The cruises will be also marketed in Spain as fly cruises using Air Pullmantur's 3 Boeings 747.

ATLANTIC STAR VAI OPERAR NO BRASIL

O paquete ATLANTIC STAR vai-se manter em actividade após ser substituído nos cruzeiros a partir de Lisboa no próximo dia 31 pelo PACIFIC DREAM.
O ATLANTIC STAR vai passar a operar no Brasil, fazendo base em Santos, numa operação conjunta da CVC e Pullmantur a partir de 1 de Julho próximo. O navio larga de Lisboa no dia 7 de Junho com rumo ao Recife em viagem posicional e depois de um cruzeiro de 4 dias inicia a 4 de Julho uma série de cruzeiros semanais com largadas de Santos todos os Sábados e escalas no Rio de Janeiro, Vitória e Salvador e regresso a Santos. Este itinerário conta com 3 dias de navegação na costa brasileira e vai ser comercializado em Espanha com partidas aos Domingos do Rio de Janeiro, incluindo voos Madrid - Rio com a Air Pullmantur, que opera com 3 Boeings 747. ATLANTIC STAR to be laid up in Marseilles

Pullmantur has decided to withdrew their steam turbine passenger ship ATLANTIC STAR from cruise service. Her final cruise departs Lisbon on 24 May and after disembarkation of passengers on 31 May she sails empty to lay up in Marseilles pending future employment or sale.
She is being replaced by PACIFIC DREAM ex-ISLAND STAR ex HORIZON, a more modern and fuel efficient ship whose own program of Mexican cruises had to be cancelled at short notice due to the epidemic of Mexican flu.
So the ATLANTIC STAR falls victim of the negative economic environment with a flu. We wish she returns to service in Portuguese waters again as she is quite an interesting ship, but these days we do not know. She is 25 year old and expensive to run. She might be the first cruise ship victim of the current economic crisis, but as so many merchant ships are being sold for scrap now prices are also down for final calls at Alang Beach.

ATLANTIC STAR retirado do mercado português

A Pullmantur vai retirar o paquete ATLANTIC STAR dos cruzeiros baseados em Lisboa no final deste mês de Maio. A última largada com passageiros de Lisboa será a 24 de Maio e no dia 31 o navio segue vazio de Lisboa para Marselha onde vai ficar imobilizado.
A partir de 31 de Maio o ATLANTIC STAR vai ser substituído pelo navio PACIFIC DREAM, mais recente e económico cujos cruzeiros baseados no México acabam de ser cancelados devido ao surto de gripe suína. Uma vez que devido a estes acontecimentos a Pullmantur ficou com o navio sem ocupação, foi decidido parar antes o ATLANTIC STAR, que é mais antigo e dispendioso devido às suas turbinas a vapor.
O PACIFIC STAR foi construído na Alemanha em 1990 para a Celebrity Cruises com o nome HORIZON. Com capacidade para 1752 passageiros, foi transferido em 2005 para a Island Cruises, operando com o nome ISLAND STAR até Março deste ano, quando foi transferido para a Pullmantur. O navio é gémeo do ZENITH, construído também para a Celebrity, em 1992, que integra a frota da Pullmantur desde 2007.

ATLANTIC STAR in Lisbon

O navio de cruzeiros ATLANTIC STAR já faz parte da paisagem marítima de Lisboa aos Domingos. Hoje, 26 de Abril, atracou em Santa Apolónia em vez de Alcântara, largando pelas 17h00 com novos passageiros no quarto cruzeiro do navio com partida de Lisboa.
Um conjunto de boas circunstâncias fizeram já do ATLANTIC STAR parte da paisagem marítima do Tejo. Nas imagens vê-se o navio atracado a Santa Apolónia, e a sair de LIsboa.

ATLANTIC STAR inicia cruzeiros em Lisboa

A companhia espanhola Pullmantur Cruises, empresa do grupo Royal Caribbean decidiu apostar no desenvolvimento do mercado de cruzeiros português ao basear em Lisboa o navio ATLANTIC STAR para uma série de cruzeiros de 7 dias com início a 5 de Abril, prolongando-se até Setembro próximo.
Esta iniciativa surge como uma oportunidade de diversificação e crescimento para a actividade de cruzeiros no Porto de Lisboa, que tem contado principalmente com movimento de navios de cruzeiros em transito ou embarques e desembarques de passageiros estrangeiros.
Desde o desaparecimento da frota portuguesa de paquetes que a operação de cruzeiros a partir de Lisboa para o mercado nacional tem sido efectuada exclusivamente pela companhia Classic International Cruises, do armador George Potamianos, que desde 1986 vem operando periodicamente com o FUNCHAL e outras unidades da sua frota a partir de Lisboa com passageiros portugueses. Para esta empresa a iniciativa da Pullmantur surge como concorrência, mas pode ser uma situação benéfica se entretanto a Pullmantur tiver exito na dinamização dos cruzeiros em Portugal.
Na minha perspectiva pessoal, o aspecto mais interessante da iniciativa da Pullmantur é o próprio navio: o ATLANTIC STAR, construído em França em 1984 para a Sitmar Cruises como FAIRSKY foi o ultimo paquete com turbinas a vapor. Trata-se de um navio único. O itinerário é muito semelhante ao que a CIC proporciona desde há anos a Marrocos e Canárias em viagens de 7 dias, com a diferença de incluir o porto do Funchal e permitir o embarque de passageiros madeirenses todas as Sextas-feiras. Pensamos que nas circunstâncias actuais a operação regular do ATLANTIC STAR não é sustentável apenas com passageiros portugueses, pelo que seria bom que o operador abrisse a divulgação e comercialização das viagens a outros mercados, nomeadamente o espanhol, o francês ou o britânico. ATLANTIC STAR maiden call in Lisbon

The cruise ship ATLANTIC STAR (built in 1984 in France as FAIRSKY for Sitmar Cruises) arrived in Lisbon at 10h00 on 1st April 2009 to start a new series of cruises based in Lisbon with departures every Sunday from 5 April to 20 September.

The ATLANTIC STAR is owned and operated by Pullmantur Cruises and was formerly the SKY WONDER. The ship spent last winter cruising from Turkey.

The Lisbon cruises include calls at Gibraltar, Casablanca, Agadir, Lanzarote and Funchal.
