RMS ANDES 1939-1971


Cover of a brochure issued by Royal Mail Lines in the late forties to promote their flagship RMS ANDES on the Europe - Brazil - Plata service, where this magnificent ship operated between 1948 and 1959, when she was converted for full time cruising.
The ANDES was built in Belfast and delivered in September 1939 by Harland & Wolff. Royal Mail intended to commemorate their first 100 years with the maiden voyage of ANDES, but the start of World War Two changed all their plans and the ANDES like so many other liners at the time was rushed into war service...

  1. My mom travelled on her towards the end of ww11 from Cape Town to the UK. Her captain being one of the few who would take women and children. She had come from Singapore and was choc a bloc with British ex.pats and troops.
