DISCOVERY arriving Lisbon 2009-05-21

The cruise ship DISCOVERY arriving Lisbon on 21 May 2009 on a cruise from the Mediterranean to U.K. This 38-year old former "love boat" was built in Emden, Germany and delivered in September 1971 to Norwegian Cruiseships A/S, Oslo, a joint venture of Fearney & Eger and O. Lorentzen, to be operated under charter by Flagship Cruises as ISLAND VENTURE (1971-1972) on Bermuda cruises from New York with sister ship SEA VENTURE.

In 1972 she was chartered and then sold to Princess Cruises who renamed her ISLAND PRINCESS (1972-1999). As such she was one of the three initial P&O - Princess Cruises very successful ships.
New more modern and much larger tonnage led to her sale in 1999 to Ringcroft Investment and she became the HYUNDAI PUNGAK (1999-2001) operating in Korea.
However in 2001 she was sold to Gerry Herrod, the former founder of Orient Line and ex-owner of MARCO POLO. Renamed PLATINUM she was refitted in Malta and Tuzla, Turkey and returned to cruise service in 2002 as DISCOVERY.
