Two interesting B&W photographs of the Port of Rotterdam showing Holland America Line passenger ships and cargo liners as well: the NIEUW AMSTERDAM is about to sail for New York while either Maasdam or her sister is at alongside. Photograph taken in the early to mid fifties, before the NEIUW AMSTERDAM had the hull repainted grey.
On the lower photo a wartime Victory-class cargo ship in HAL colours can also be seen berthed in Rotterdam

I have just posted a photo from my collection showing the NIEUW AMSTERDAM about to sail from the HAL dock in Rotterdam, mid-fifties.
ReplyDeleteBehind her is either MAASDAM or her sister RIJNDAM.
Anyone knows how to recognize those two sisters from each other?
Sister mostly have small differences that allow us to recognize each
and everyone...

ReplyDeleteOn the photo it is very hard to find if it is Maasdam or Rijndam.
One has to have a closer look to the sides of the ships and
especially to the windows below the bridge.
Both have six windows, however, Maasdam has the as 3 - 3, while
Rijndam is 2 - 4.
The windows just above them on starboardside are also different.
Rijndam has 3 high windows and 2 smaller ones, while Maasdam has 2
high windows and 2 smaller ones.
On portside, Rijndam has 6 high windows and Maasdam has only 5.
