O veleiro SENHORA DA CONCEIÇÃO foi construído no estaleiro de Philip & Son Limited, em Dartmouth, Inglaterra, e lançado à água no rio Dart a 21-08-1875 com o nome RIPPLE, para o armador Putt, Drew and Co., de Brixham, em cujo porto foi registado. Nº oficial: 71867; Arqueação bruta: 172 toneladas; Arqueação líquida: 163 toneladas. Em 06-1888 a escuna RIPPLE foi adquirida por Francisco Henriques, Ilha da Madeira, e registada no Funchal com o nome ESPERANÇA. O navio seria vendido no mesmo ano ao armador Francisco Rodrigues & Cia., de Lisboa, sem alteração do nome e registado na Capitania do porto de Lisboa a 1-08-1888. A 29-04-1907 o comerciante madeirense João Martins da Silva comprou a escuna ESPERANÇA, que registou na Capitania do Porto do Funchal a 18-05-1907 com o nome SENHORA DA CONCEIÇÃO, como propriedade de Dª. Carolina Amélia Martins da Silva, sua mulher, para “tráfego de grande cabotagem”. A aquisição deste navio representa o início da actividade marítima da actual Empresa de Navegação Madeirense, Lda., pois a escuna SENHORA DA CONCEIÇÃO foi o primeiro navio a integrar a frota de J. M. da Silva, fundador da Madeirense. Utilizada principalmente em viagens entre a Madeira e o Continente, a SENHORA DA CONCEIÇÃO saiu do Funchal a 24-05-1907 na primeira viagem a Lisboa ao serviço de J. M. da Silva, regressando ao Funchal a 14-06 “com diversa carga para esta Ilha”. Prestou serviço até 19-04-1917, data em que foi afundada por torpedeamento pelo submarino alemão U 52 (Kapitanleutnant Hans Walther) no mar da Galiza, na costa NW de Espanha, quando navegava de França para o Funchal com um carregamento de enxofre. Os 8 tripulantes salvaram-se e desembarcaram em Gijon, Espanha.

The schooner SENHORA DA CONCEIÇÃO was built by Philip & Son Limited, in Dartmouth, England, and launched in the river Dart on 21-08-1875 as RIPPLE, for Putt, Drew and Co., Brixham, where she was registered on 11-08-1875. Official: 71867; Gross tonnage: 172 tons; Net tonnage: 163 tons. In 06-1888 the schooner RIPPLE was sold to Francisco Henriques, Madeira Island, and registered at Funchal as ESPERANÇA. She was resold on the same year to Francisco Rodrigues & Cia., Lisbon, and registered in Lisbon on 1-08-1888. On 29-04-1907 Mr João Martins da Silva, a businessman from Funchal, purchased the schooner ESPERANÇA. He registered her in Funchal on 18-05-1907 as SENHORA DA CONCEIÇÃO, under the ownership of Mrs Carolina Amélia Martins da Silva, his wife, for “short sea and ocean trading”. The purchase of this ship represents the start of the shipping business that led to the present Empresa de Navegação Madeirense, Lda., as the SENHORA DA CONCEIÇÃO was the initial merchant ship in the fleet of J. M. da Silva, the founder of Empresa Madeirense. Trading mainly between Madeira and the Mainland Portugal, the SENHORA DA CONCEIÇÃO sailed from Funchal on 24-05-1907 on her first voyage to Lisbon under the management of J. M. da Silva, returning to Funchal on 14-06 “with a diverse range of cargo for this Island”. The SENHORA DA CONCEIÇÃO was torpedoed and sunk on 19-04-1917, by the German submarine U 52 (Kapitanleutnant Hans Walther) in the Bay of Biscay, off the NW coast of Spain, while on a voyage from France to Funchal with a cargo of sulphur. The crew of 8 reached Gijon, Spain.
