The MS ORIANA refit at Blohm + Voss Repair, Hamburg: Blohm + Voss Repair has has been awarded by the shipping company P & O Cruises a contract for renovation work on the "MS Oriana". The luxury cruise ship arrived on 16 November 2011 in Hamburg and has been dry-docked. The overhaul and refurbishment work at Dock 11 will take four weeks to complete, with redelivery to P&O scheduled for 17 December 2011.
The work planned on the ship is quite extensive and includes many different areas. This gives the "MS Oriana," a so-called "duck tail"; for the ship which means a more stable position in the water, thus increasing the comfort of passengers. In addition, this modification allows for an increase in cabin number. Some public spaces are transformed in the course of work on indoor and outdoor booths. In addition, the pool area will be modernized and upgraded by a new bar and lounge areas are built.
The maintenance work includes the expansion and overhaul of the drive shaft at the rear. In addition, an overhaul and replacement of engines, machinery and piping, and electrical and control systems is also on the program. Finally, the ballast tanks of the ship will be inspected, emptied and cleaned with steel plates replaced, while various steel works complete the job.
