O MARCO POLO é o único sobrevivente dos 5 navios soviéticos da classe IVAN FRANKO, construídos entre 1964 e 1972 na antiga RDA. Foi o segundo navio da classe, entregue em 1965 com o nome ALEXANDR PUSHKIN.
