MONTEREY former MSC classic cruise ship

Steam turbine cruise ship MONTEREY photographed in the Mediterranean in April 2006 on her final season before sale to Alang for scrap later that year.

First two photos in Barcelona on 24 April, the others in Civitavecchia on 27 April.

Both ships gone and scrapped after long, varied and useful lives as passenger ships.

Conjunto de fotografias do antigo paquete MONTEREY, uma das primeiras unidades a integrar a frota da MSC CRUISES e entretanto já substituído e desmantelado.

O MONTEREY foi inicialmente um navio de carga norte americano, construído em 1952 e convertido em navio de passageiros para a companhia MATSON LINES, de S. Francisco,em 1955-56, tendo-se destinado à carreira Califórnia - Hawai - Nova Zelândia - Austrália.

Posteriormente foi operado pela Pacific Far East Lines e pela Aloha Pacific Cruises, até ser vendido em Março de 1990 a interesses ligados a MSC e integrado na frota da Lauro Cruises, passando a operar com o ACHILLE LAURO.
Com o afundamento deste no oceano Indico em Dezembro de 1994, no ano seguinte os cruzeiros da Lauro passaram a chamar MSC Cruises e o MONTEREY foi pintado com as novas cores.

Navegou ao serviço da MSC até Outubro de 2006 e foi vendido para desmantelar na India no final desse ano (chegou a Alang no início de Novembro de 2006).

OCEANIC at New York

I was high above the Hudson, at Stevens campus in Hoboken, when, on a Sat afternoon in June 1977, I caught the outbound cruise ship OCEANIC as it passed a Staten Island ferry. The ferry was not normally on the Hudson, but running a charter jazz cruise as far north as the George Washington Bridge.

Farewell to THE OCEANIC

THE OCEANIC berthed at Piraeus on 28 March 2012 on her final world cruise for the Japanese organization Peace Boat.

Built in Italy in 1965 for Home Lines the OCEANIC has been a very successful passenger ship ever since, butis now running out of the old beauty and a sale to be broken up is now expected after she is replaced by OCEAN DREAM on 25 April.

A group of former crew members and staff of Home Lines met onboard the OCEANIC at Piraeus, including Greek shipowner Pericles Panagopoulos who worked for Home Lines before setting up Royal Cruise Line.

OCEAN DREAM sold to Peace Boat

The cruise ship OCEAN DREAM has been sold by Pullmantur to interests associated to the Japanese organization PEACE BOAT.

OCEAN DREAM is operating out of Fortaleza on cruises to Fernando de Noronha in Brazil, until early April. Afterwards she will be delivered to the new owners in Panama.

With the purchase of OCEAN DREAM, the future of the classic steam turbine ocean liner THE OCEANIC looks bleak and probably she doing now her final world cruise.

The OCEANIC was one of the most magnificent liners built in Italy in the 1960s. She was delivered to Home Lines in 1965 and cruised out of New York for the next twenty years... Despite being now an old and costly ship, the OCEANIC has operated successfully for the last 47 years. I would not be surprised to see her go to Alang soon...

THE OCEANIC a subir a costa portuguesa

O paquete THE OCEANIC está a subir a costa portuguesa em viagem de Barcelona para o Havre em mais uma volta ao mundo com pacifistas japoneses da organização Peace Boat.

O OCEANIC é um dos mais belos navios de passageiros do século XX. Foi construído em Itália para a companhia Home Lines e tem registado um grande sucesso desde o inicio. Para além das linhas clássicas imponentes este paquete continua a navegar com a instalação motora de origem: turbinas  a vapor, um sistema associado a um consumo de combustível elevado que por essa mesma razão caiu em desuso.

O OCEANIC visitou Lisboa uma única vez em Abril de 2001, quando veio ao Tejo na viagem de entrega das Bahamas para Espanha após compra pela Pullmantur, quando o navio era comandado pelo capitão da marinha mercante português Amadeu Albuquerque...

Ainda não é desta que voltamos a ver o OCEANIC num porto português. Sugere-se uma petição aos japoneses no sentido de considerarem a inclusão de Lisboa, Funchal ou Ponta Delgada em futuros itinerários do OCEANIC...

OCEANIC in Lisbon

The famous cruise ship OCEANIC only visited Lisbon once, so far, on her delivery voyage from the Bahamas following her purchase by Pullmantur cruises in 2001. She still had her former Premier Cruises livery, the funnel repainted full white.
The top photograph was taken on 4 April 2001 on the OCEANIC's arrival at Rocha Passenger Terminal. The second one was taken the next day, 5 April 2001.

NEW YORK PASSENGER SHIPPING 1975

While looking into my old photographs I found that great image of passenger ships in New York. It was taken in June 1975 and sent by The Port Authority of NY & NJ from their old office at One Trade Center, New York. The address is no longer active. Neither are three of the six ships. From left to right, the Norwegian America Line SAGAFJORD is still sailing as the SAGA ROSE; the DORIC ex-SHALOM of Home Lines sunk on her way to under Pullmantur /RCCL ownership the breakers as the SUN. The Italian Line flagship MICHELANGELO was doing her very last voyages and was withdrawn that summer. After an obscure career at the Iranian Navy she was scrapped in Pakistan; the OCEANIC is still cruising under the same name, while the ROTTERDAM (1959) is being converted into an hotel ship in Germany. Her fleet mate STATENDAM was scrapped in Alang after many years of lay up and neglect in Greece...
