The OLYMPIA at Barbados

The pride of the Greek merchant fleet in the nineteen fifties and one of the most elegant Clyde built liners of the post war era: the Greek Line flagship OLYMPIA berthed at Barbados on Caribbean cruise back in 1966.

I knew very well the OLYMPIA as she was a regular visitor to Lisbon on her transatlantic voyages. In her later Greek years she turned more and more to cruising until laid up in 1974 prior to the bankrupcy of the famous Greek Line in January 1975.

LISBON PAX SHIPPING SCENE September 1972

The early nineteen seventies were busy times for the port of Lisbon in termns of passenger shipping as stated in this official list with all passenger ship calls registered in September 1972.

I miss so many of those ships... One of the passenger ships in the list is still sailing under the same name and flag: Which one is she?

EAGLE fitting out March 1971

Two views of the then brand new cruise ferry EAGLE undergoing final fitting out at St. Nazaire in March 1971.
EAGLE was Michael Sutcliffe's final ship and she was purpose built for a Southampton - Lisbon regular service which she did well between May 1971 and October 1975.

Chaminés tipo QE2

Um dos aspectos revolucionários associados à estética do paquete inglês QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 foi a sua chaminé extremamente original. O impacto foi tão grande que depressa influenciou outros navios, com destaque para os gémeos da Royal Viking Line de 1972-73, cujo primeiro paquete, o ROYAL VIKING STAR é agora o BLACK WATCH da Fred. Olsen, cuja chaminé fotografámos no Tejo a 16 de Janeiro último, à largada na sua escala mais recente.

QM2 in Lisbon again

QUEEN MARY 2 made her first call in Lisbon this year today 13 January on her world cruise. She arrived at 12h00 and sailed at 19h00 for the Mediterranean.

The weather was far from good but even in gray light I was very pleased with the photos I took on her arrival.
Only wish it was sunny and the result could have been just terrific. In fact Lisbon is a great place to see all the passenger ships.

ZÉZITO escoltou QM2

Foi com emoção que esta manhã Lisboa assistiu a mais uma proeza do famoso rebocador português ZÉZITO a quem coube a nobre tarefa de dar as boas vindas e escoltar rio acima o paquete inglês QUEEN MARY 2, conforme registámos na foto que se apresenta.
Não tendo sido possível uma manifestação de boas vindas mais aparatosa, devido ao processo de desmaritimização em curso, a presença do ZÉZITO salvou a honra do convento e foi muito apreciada a bordo do navio da Cunard.

Mais passageiros em Lisboa em 2009

Com 415 758 passageiros de cruzeiro, o porto de Lisboa alcançou, em 2009, um novo recorde ao ultrapassar os 407 508 passageiros que visitaram Lisboa em 2008, representando um crescimento de 2%.
Para este aumento significativo nos passageiros registado no ano que agora terminou foi determinante o incremento de 116% registado no número de turistas que iniciou ou terminou a sua viagem em Lisboa. Na verdade, em 2009 o segmento de turnaround atingiu o seu número mais elevado de sempre em Lisboa - 83 873 passageiros. Para este recorde foi determinante, quer o crescimento de 128% dos passageiros embarcados, que totalizaram 43 097, quer o incremento de 103% ocorrido nos passageiros desembarcados, que corresponderam a 40 776 turistas.
Ao nível das escalas, este segmento registou também o número mais elevado desde o início da década de 1970 em Lisboa, tendo-se situado nas 95 e o segmento do trânsito responsável pelas restantes 200 visitas de navios de cruzeiro que ocorreram no porto de Lisboa durante 2009.
De referir ainda que, no ano passado, o porto de Lisboa recebeu em primeira escala 13 navios, sendo que 4 estavam a realizar a sua viagem inaugural. (Texto adaptado de informação da APL). Com 6 navios que fazem o mesmo número de escalas, o destaque vai para o QUEEN MARY 2, que escala Lisboa a 13 de Janeiro no seu cruzeiro de volta ao mundo iniciado em Nova Iorque. De realçar igualmente a escala inaugural do novo paquete SILVER SPIRIT, da SILVERSEA CRUISES, que visitou Lisboa de 1 a 3 de Janeiro no final do seu cruzeiro inaugural. Janeiro de 2010 regista a visita de mais 4 navios de cruzeiros: os gémeos BLACK WATCH e BOUDICCA, da Fred. Olsen, o MARCO POLO e o ORIANA.

The same funnel, different colours...

The same funnel in different colours: which one is the best looking livery? Saga Cruises Yellow, white and blue or the traditional Cunard red and black?

As built as NAL VISTAFJORD, it was buff with the national colours of Norway.

Anyway, yellow or red she is now one of the best looking classic passenger ships still in service...

A MEMORABLE DAY

Maurizio Eliseo sent me the following photographs and words concerning a memorable event: the floating-out of the newest Cunarder, the QUEEN ELIZABETH, in Monfalcone, near Trieste on 5 January 2010:

"Photographs of the ceremony of today for the float-out of the new Queen Elizabeth. The lady in red is the "madrina", Mrs F.M.G. Farmer. The group photo shows, from left to right,Cunard's Presindend and CEO, the Fincantieri Monfalcone yard Director, M.E. (organizer of the heritage tour and of the press material for the event), and the ship's sponsor. The heritage trail was organised with memorabilia from the Maurizio Eliseo and the Paolo Piccione Collection.

Pilot Boat in Kusadasi

At the moment I was on board the Portuguese classic cruise liner FUNCHAL on a long 17-day summer cruise from Lisbon.

P&O liners in Hong Kong

P&O - Orient Lines passenger liners in Hong Kong harbour in the 1960s: from top to bottom, CANBERRA, then the P&O flagship and the largest ever built for the Australian service, IBERIA, like CANBERRA a product of the famous Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast, and ORCADES, a ship from the Orient Line side of the Group.

ARION arriving Lisbon 2009-11-09

It is always nice to see the ARION return to her homeport after another cruise season. She arrived yesterday at about 5h00 PM and berthed at Santa Apolonia with fleet mate PRINCESS DANAE.
ARION will now stay in Lisbon until early next year and a new season of Red sea and Mediterranean cruises.

FUNCHAL laid up at Trafaria

The Portuguese cruise ship FUNCHAL returned to the Tagus river on 20 October 2009 for lay up and repairs after a short period of lay up at Portimão, Algarve where she arrived on 9 October.
FUNCHAL ended her program of summer cruises out of Lisbon on 5 October and sailed for Algarve on 8 October. Now she is back and will berth at the grain bulk terminal of SILOPOR at Trafaria, a fishing village on the South bank of the river Tagus in front of Lisbon. Following SOLAS 2010 related refiting work she returne to cruise service on 26 March 2010 from Lisbon.
