Collecting post cards of ships

My lifelong interest in ships turned into a serious matter in 1962 when I was 5-year old and sated a collection of post cards of ships with two cards: Cunard's CARONIA and American Export CONSTITUTION.
It was the start of my collection of post cards, photos and ship's memorabilia...
The card od RMS BERENGARIA published in this post is an original obtained on board the ship in September 1926, so it is written on the back.
See more post cards here.

The New MAURETANIA

The New MAURETANIA a triumph in modern shipbuilding - First sailing JUNE 17 - so Cunard White Star Limited of Liverpool announced in their stationery.
In fact the new MAURETANIA did sail on her maiden voyage to New York in 17 June 1939. Two other large new passenger liners with maiden voyages scheduled for that ill fated summer of 1939, the Royal Mail Line's ANDES and  Cie Sud-Atlantique's PASTEUR did not make it: ANDES would have sailed on her maiden voyage on 26 September and the French PASTEUR on 16 September, but war changer it all.
My dear friend Eugénio Cavalheiro considered a crossing to New York to attend the EXPO and so contacted Cunard in May but in the end did not go. The reply from Cunard is now a piece of memorabilia in my collection.
RMS MAURETANIA served as a troop transport during WW2 and returned to Cunard Atlantic service and cruising. She was scrapped in 1965. Post card and photo from the Luís Miguel Correia collection.

French Line's ANTILLES lost 40 years ago...

Forty years ago, in January 1971, the beautiful French Line passenger ship ANTILLES was lost by grounding followed by fire off Mustique Island while cruising the Caribbean.
Dhe was a beautiful ship, looking very French and showing almost naval ship lines. This post card published in Great Britain using a photograph by Beken of Cowes is her best colour photograph in my oppinion.
I remember well when she was lost, and this was very sad for two reasons. the loss of a fantastic ship and the fact that she was schedulled to call in Lisbon in late January 1971, she never came so I was unable to see her...
ANTILLES was replaced in the French Line fleet by the BERGENSFJORD, purchased later in 1971 and renamed DE GRASSE (1971-1973).

TITANIC POSCARD

A company post card of the famous and tragic RMS TITANIC written and posted on 11 April 1912: "Ce bateaux est vraiment magnifique" - this ship is really magnificent... A post card signed by Elizabeth. Was she a passenger onboard the doomed liner? Did she reach New York on the CARPATHIA? We'll never know.
Post card from the collection of Luís Miguel Correia.

French Line's FLANDRE of 1952

A beautiful liner, the FLANDRE of 1952 served the French Line for  almost 16 years until sold and delivered in February 1968 to Costa Line, when she became the CARLA C. Between late 1968 and August 1970 the CARLA C operated under charter to Princess Cruises and in 1974 was sent to Amsterdam to have the steam turbines replaced by diesel engines. This refit allowed the CARLA C to operate under Costa colours until her sale to Epirotiki in 1992. Renamed PALLAS ATHENA, she was lost by fire in March 1994 in Piraeus and scrapped in Aliaga in 1995.

FLANDRE cruising

The French Line S.S. FLANDRE of 1952 was the first passenger liner built for the North Atlantic service of Cie Générale Transatlantique (French Line). Although intended for the Central America service like her sister ANTILLES, she was used on the New York run from July 1952 up to November 1962. Liner voyages were complemented by cruises and in this photograph she is obviously in cruising mode.

LAFAYETTE on icy waters

A more realistic image of the French Line motor passenger ship LAFAYETTE of 1930 seen cruising in northern waters in the 1930s, probably on a trip from Le Havre to the Artic Sea.
This is also a post card, but printed as a glossy black & white photograph, a kind of post card I particularly enjoy.

Paquebot LAFAYETTE

Two post cards based on the same original image depicting the French Line passenger ship LAFAYETTE of 1930. A fine motorship which acted as renning mate to the famous NORMANDIE until her loss by fire in 1938. It was a sad loss for a ship about the same generation as the Italian twins SATURNIA and VULCANIA.
