Another Cunard passenger liner bearing the name CARINTHIA was built at Clydebank by the John Brown shipyard, as the third of four SAXONIA-class sisters. CARINTHIA's career was a brief one if compared to her previous namesake, as she only remained under Cunard ownership for 12 years. In 1968 she was withdrawn from service and sold to Sitmar. Renamed FAIRLAND at first, she was later rebuilt as FAIRSEA while her sister SYLVANIA became the FAIRWIND. When Princess Cruises took over Sitmar in 1988 she was renamed FAIR PRINCESS and in 2000 became the casino ship CHINA SEA DISCOVERY, but was not successful in this final role so in 2005 she was sold for scrap and sailed for Alang under the name SEA DISCOVERY.
Still refering to her Cunard days, the CARINTHIA was the only one of the four SAXONIAs to remain with black hull until sold. Her handsome exterior lines can be seen to advantage in this post card from a Beken of Cowes original photo in my collection.
