ARKONA no Funchal

Navio de cruzeiros alemão ARKONA ex-ASTOR de 1981 fotografado no porto do Funchal a 2 de Janeiro de 1998. Esta fotografia associa diversos aspectos a salientar: o porto do Funchal mudou muito desde então, o molhe da Pontinha perdeu os guindastes e os contentores, tendo sido reconvertido para servir em exclusivo os navios de passageiros; o ARKONA é um navio especial para mim, tendo entrado ao serviço em 1981 numa época em que a construção de novos paquetes de turismo era pouco frequente e ainda se pensava que o reinado dos grandes navios de passageiros havia chegado ao fim. Contrariando essa perspectiva, em 1980 e 1981 a Alemanha promoveu a construção de três novos paquetes de cruzeiros - ASTOR, BERLIN e EUROPA, o primeiro dos quais apresentamos na fotografia com o seu segundo nome ARKONA. Este belo navio de linhas tipicamente alemãs tem tido uma carreira muito variada, navegando actualmente ao serviço do grupo britânico Saga.

SAGA PEARL II ex-ASTOR of 1981

The cruise ship SAGA PEARL II photographed at Funchal on 31 December 2010.

Built in Hamburg in 1980-81 as HAMMONIA and renamed ASTOR while fitting out, she was one of the first new cruise ships of the nineteen eighties, starting a new era in the history of passenger and cruise shipping after a period of decline associated to the period of 1965-1980, when it was generaly accepted that the days of the large passenger ships were over and liners like the QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 of 1969 would never be built again... 

The first ASTOR entered service on 14 December 1981 operated by HADAG under the German flag. In February 1984 she was transferred to the South African registry under Safmarine ownership and in August 1985 she was renamed ARKONA replacing the VOLKERFREUNDSCHAFT as the East German "official" cruise ship. In 2001 she became the ASTORIA operating for Transocean Cruises and in April 2010 she was introduced by Saga Cruises as SAGA RUBY II.

SAGA now owns the first German new cruise ships of the eighties: BERLIN, ASTOR and EUROPA...

FUNCHAL a 5 de Fevereiro de 2002

No molhe da Pontinha os três navios de cruzeiros são, da esquerda para a direita, o COSTA VICTORIA, o THOPAZ e o ARKONA.

No cais Norte pode observar-se um porta-contentores da Transinsular, o MONTE DA GUIA.

Passados oito anos o aspecto do porto do Funchal está muito diferente, com a nova estação marítima e modificações profundas no cais Norte.

NOVO SAGA trocou Lisboa por Leixões

O navio de cruzeiros SAGA PEARL II, que tinha marcada para ontem, 5 de Abril de 2010, a escala inaugural em Lisboa, acabou por trocar o Tejo pelo porto de Leixões por efeito de mau tempo que provocou o atraso na viagem após sair de Southampton a 2 de Abril.

O SAGA PEARL II permaneceu durante a manhã de ontem atracado em Leixões, largando pelas 14 horas para o Funchal. O navio deverá visitar Lisboa a 14 ou 15 de Abril, no regresso do cruzeiro que está a efectuar a Portugal, Ilhas Atlânticas e Marrocos.

O SAGA PEARL II foi comprado em 2009 pela Saga Cruises e é o substituto do veterano SAGA ROSE, retirado em Dezembro. O navio data de 1981 e chamou-se anteriormente ASTOR (1981-85), ARKONA (1985-2001) e ASTORIA (2001-2009). Não confundir com o seu irmão mais recente ASTOR de 1985.
