OCEAN PRINCESS at Funchal, Madeira Island

Cruise ship OCEAN PRINCESS photographed alongside Funchal harbour on 10 December 2015. OCEAN PRINCESS is the former TAHITIAN PRINCESS (2002-2009), ex-R FOUR (1999-2002), the fourth of eight sisters built in St. Nazaire for Renaissance Cruises in 1998-2001.

OCEAN PRINCESS has already been sold to Oceania Cruises and she is set for delivery in March 2016 and is schedulled for a $ 40 million refit in Marseilles prior to being renamed SIRENA.

Navios de cruzeiros no Funchal a 10 de Dezembro

Navios de cruzeiros ARTANIA, MAASDAM e OCEAN PRINCESS atracados ao molhe da Pontinha, no porto do Funchal, na tarde de 10 de Dezembro de 2015, fotografados do parque de Santa Catarina e Quinta Vigia. A recordar um dia em Setembro de 1972 em que vi pela última vez o PENDENNIS CASTLE chegar de Las Palmas e fundear mesmo por detrás do molhe da Pontinha pouco antes de os jardins da Quinta Vigia fecharem para darem lugar ao Casino Parque Hotel...

PORT OF LISBON DAILY PHOTO

Grandes investimentos de modernização ou recuperação de infraestruturas efectuados nos anos mais recentes no Porto de Lisboa têm resultado visualmente em mudanças significativas da paisagem marítima de Lisboa. É o caso do Jardim do Tabaco, com o aterro da velha doca e reconstrução do cais para serviço de navios de cruzeiros. Está prevista para este local a construção de uma estação marítima e do prolongamento do novo cais em mais 140 metros para jusante a alinhar com o molhe nascente da Doca da Marinha, por forma a permitir futuramente a atracação de mais um navio de passageiros. The Port of Lisbon Authority has been spending huge amounts of money to upgrade the port facilities, including the Santa Apolónia and Jardim do Tabaco new berths intended mainly for cruise ships. OCEAN PRINCESS in Lisbon

The cruise ship OCEAN PRINCESS visited Lisbon again on 29 August 2012 and berthed at the Jardim do Tabaco cruise terminal in downtown Lisbon, just in front of the Alfama quarters.

One of the former Renaissance Cruises final eight sisters, the OCEAN PRINCESS is a small ship by today's standards, and a very attractive one.

Princess Cruises is one of the mainstream cruise companies that does not call in Lisbon very often, although our port is a must for most cruise lines and cruise passengers or "guests"...

A strange cruise port

I have returned to Gibraltar recently only to find the port is becoming less and less interesting as a cruising port. 

By today's standards it seems strange to have fuel tanks close to the passenger ship berths. One such tank exploded in May while INDEPENDENCE OF THE SEAS was alongside.

From the ship's decks the view is made of dull modern buildings and even Main Street shopping seems decadent. 

Gibraltar was a much better touristic place back in 1984 when I first went alongside on that same pier... Despite all the shortcomings, the Rock is still a popular port of call with the maincruise operators sending their ships to Gibraltar.

Camarotes com vista para a varanda...

Uma das tendências mais fortes das últimas décadas em termos de concepção de navios de cruzeiros é traduzida pelo crescimento dos camarotes com varandas nos navios mais modernos.

Sem dúvida que é muito agradável ter uma varanda privativa a bordo, mas os passageiros que optam por esse tipo de alojamento acabam por se isolarem mais no navio, socializando menos com  os outros passageiros, etc...

Claro que camarote + varanda = mais dinheiro para o navio = mais lucro para o operador...

Imagens registadas há dias em Gibraltar: varandas do n/m OCEAN PRINCESS da Princess Cruises, uma das empresas do Grupo Carnival.

Varandas à parte, não há sensação melhor que uma cadeira tradicional de deck e um livro para umas horas agradáveis num qualquer tombadilho...

Two ex-Renaissance sisters in Lisbon

Two of the eight former Renaissance Cruises R One-class cruise ships visited Lisbon on 3rd June 2011: Princess Cruises OCEAN PRINCESS, ex-TAHITIAN PRINCESS, ex-R FOUR (30.277 GT / 1999) and Oceania Cruises INSIGNIA ex-R ONE (30.299 GT / 1998).

Both ships left the river Tagus on the afternoon and were photographed off Oeiras, at the Tagus Bar.

All eight sister were built at St. Nazaire by Chantiers de L'Atlantique between 1998 and 2001 and their original careers were short lived as Renaissance went bankrupt soon after September 11th 2001.
