CANBERRA, S. JORGE, MARTIM MONIZ

Passam agora vinte anos que o paquete inglês CANBERRA concluiu o seu derradeiro cruzeiro e foi vendido para demolição no Paquistão. 

Na altura, para assinalar a ocasião, forçada pelas alterações à convenção SOLAS que foram implementadas em Outubro desse ano precisamente, publiquei um livro com a história deste grande paquete da P&O, feito conjuntamente com o meu amigo Bill Miller, primeiro de uma colecção intitulada LINER BOOKS. 

Esta fotografia é anterior, data de 16 de Abril de 1993, e faz parte de uma série de imagens que nessa manhã fiz dos novos barcos de passageiros então construídos na Alemanha para uma carreira Cais do Sodré - Barreiro, os gémeos S. JORGE e MARTIM MONIZ, os quais vieram para Lisboa pelo "seu pé", numa longa viagem Danúbio abaixo até ao Mar Negro, após o que atravessaram o Egeu e todo o Mediterrâneo até chegarem ao Tejo. A Transtejo pôs um "Cacilhense" à minha disposição e de bordo fiz uma série de fotos dos novos barcos em conjunto e navegando individualmente, e como nessa manhã o CANBERRA decorava o Cais de Alcântara, lá resolvi assinalar o momento com os três navios de passageiros, o inglês grande e os nossos novíssimos. Dos três hoje resta em Lisboa o S. JORGE, o seu irmão foi reconstruído na Navalria para os cruzeiros no Douro há tempos.

Votando um pouco ao CANBERRA, este navio de cruzeiros era o maior que frequentava Lisboa com regularidade em 1975 quando comecei a fotografar com uma máquina decente, uma Olympus. Na altura a percepção era que estes grandes navios tinham todos os dias contados, o próprio CANBERRA não fora para a sucata em 1973 por um triz, quando no seu lugar acabaram por mandar o ORSOVA. Em termos de navios e cruzeiros, o nosso mundo mudou para melhor entretanto...

CANBERRA, S. JORGE, MARTIM MONIZ...

P&O liner and cruise ship CANBERRA photographed in Lisbon on 1993-04-16 at her usual berth in Alcântara. On that day I photographed a lot of shipping on the river Tagus, namely the CANBERRA and the then new German-built sisters S. JORGE and MARTIM MONIZ, two 1000 pax ferries designed for a route from Cais do Sodré to Barreiro that never materialized, the ships being operated mainly at peak hours under charter to the Portuguese Railways and later Soflusa. CANBERRA was gone to Pakistan breakers in October 1997, but the Portuguese twins are still in service in the fleet of Transtejo, in Lisbon.

Passenger cruise shipping in Lisbon May 1991

The famous passenger liner and cruise ship CANBERRA arriving Lisbon very early in the morning of 23 May 1991 to berth at the Alcântara terminal. CANBERRA was one of 20 ships making 25 cruise calls in Lisbon back in May 1991. See list bellow showing all the ships, including some of te very best cruise ships in service 23 years ago, including Hapag-Lloyd's EUROPA of 1981, the AKDENIZ, QE2 and many others.

Maio de 1991 foi um mês com muito movimento de navios de cruzeiros em Lisboa, com 25 escalas asseguradas por 20 navios diferentes, incluindo alguns dos maiores e mais importantes então em serviço, como o QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 da Cunard ou o CANBERRA da P&O, tendo este feito três escalas. Ver lista anexa. O movimento de navios de passageiros em Lisboa foi crescendo sempre desde o final da guerra em 1945 até 1973, que foi um ano excelente, com muitos navios de linha e em cruzeiros, incluindo portugueses. No final da década de 1970 o movimento de navios de passageiros voltou a crescer, devagar contando com os navios da URSS que passaram a visitar Lisboa a partir de 1975 e com a retoma na construção de navios de cruzeiros, a partir de 1981, com os paquetes alemães EUROPA, ASTOR e BERLIN, e muitos outros que se seguiram a estes pioneiros.

CANBERRA in Durban March 1979

I

 In 1979 the P&O flagship CANBERRA was the second largest passenger liner and cruise ship in active service after the Cunarder QUEEN ELIZABETH 2. The 89-day world cruise operated by CANBERRA 6th January to 6th April 1979 included a call in Durban on 14th and 15th March were Trevor Jones registered the images presented in this post. CANBERRA departed Southampton for Port Everglades, Bonaire, Panama Canal, Acapulco, San Francisco, Honolulu, Lahaina, Suva, Auckland, Sydney, Rabaoul, Hong Long, Singapore, Mauritius, Durban, Cape Town, Rio de Janeiro, Tenerife, Funchal and back to Southampton. CANBERRA's fleet mate was the magnificent ORIANA of 1960 which operated from Sydney on cruises catered to the Australian market from 20 December 1978 to 4th April 1979 and then made a liner voyage to Southampton via Panama operating out of Southampton from 15th May 1979 until November. P&O also operated the UGANDA on British India educational cruises and SUN, ISLAND and PACIFIC Princesses under the Princess Cruises livery in US waters...

CANBERRA looks magnificent in Trevor images with her funnels freshly repainted buff alongside the Durban passenger terminal... CANBERRA was exactly in the middle of her 36-year long life and it would be only in 1997 that she was taken out of service and broken up in Pakistan.

CANBERRA underway at sea

CANBERRA is regarded today as one of the most famous passenger liners of the twentieth century and a masterpiece of the no less famous Harland & Wolff shipyard of Belfast.

On 16 August 1995 I had the good chance to photograph her at sea outside the lanes on the Atlantic side of Gibraltar Straits. 

I was onboard the FUNCHAL going to the Med and it was just one of those magic moments. As both ships were  moving at more than 35 knots combined speed it all went really fast...

CANBERRA  was nearing the end of her long career as in just two years time she was sold to be broken up in Pakistan.

CANBERRA in Lisbon

CANBERRA had twin tanker-type funnels and turbo-electric machinery aft. She was very modern in 1961 and the final great passenger liner built in Belfast by Harland and Wolff.

CANBERRA in Lisbon

Back in 1975 P&O's CANBERRA was the largest passenger ship calling  regularly on her multiple cruises from Southampton. 

With ORIANA she seemed to be the last of her kind. 

By then she was large and needed several tugs to assist  her docking manoeuvres...

On the first photo another classic steam turbine passenger ship can be seen: Polish Ocean Lines' flagship STEFAN BATORY ex- MAASDAM.

P&O liners in Hong Kong

P&O - Orient Lines passenger liners in Hong Kong harbour in the 1960s: from top to bottom, CANBERRA, then the P&O flagship and the largest ever built for the Australian service, IBERIA, like CANBERRA a product of the famous Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast, and ORCADES, a ship from the Orient Line side of the Group.

CANBERRA leaving Lisbon

P&O CANBERRA of 1961 departing from Lisbon on 28 September 1996. The final masterpiece from the famous Harland & Wolff Belfast shipyards, she was a trend setter for most of her long career as a passenger liner and cruise ship with a spell in the South Atlantic as a troopship in 1982. By 1996 she is near the end of her long life for a P&O ship and only one more year of cruise service is left before her final voyage East to the breakers in Pakistan. In 1996 her profile was outdated, but at the time I could not notice it. She was always one of my favorite ships of the 1960s.

CANBERRA NO TEJO

Paquete inglês CANBERRA de 1961 largando do Tejo a 28 de Setembro de 1996, numa das últimas visitas que este grande navio fez a Lisboa.
O CANBERRA esteve pela primeira vez em Lisboa em 1964, repetindo regularmente as suas visitas até ao final de 1996. O navio foi retirado do serviço em 1997 e desmantelado no Paquistão em 1997-98.

CANBERRA early morning arrival in Lisbon

Early morning arrival in Lisbon of the classic P&O flagship CANBERRA in July 1991.
By then she was one of the largest ships cruising in European waters. The shape of ships has changed a lot in the meantime and today it is difficult to find another classic profile of this size still going stong. The closer we have left is the OCEANIC of Pullmantur cruises, still based in Barcelona for year round 7-day cruises in the Mediterranean.

P&O CANBERRA in LISBON

The P&O Steam Navigation Company flagship CANBERRA visited Lisbon more than 120 times between 1964 and 1996, and many of those calls were recorded in negative film and or slide, including those published here from the mid eighties. One of the largest passenger ships of the world, with her 45.000 grt, she had the traditional elegance of all Harland & Wolff passenger liners, CANBERRA being the final one Belfast-built. A trend setter, many of her innovative features can still be recognized aboard the actual generation of P&O cruise ships.
