Belíssimo cartaz da companhia de navegação Matson Lines, de São Francisco, publicitando os paquetes MONTEREY e MARIPOSA a navegarem em São Francisco.
Construídos como cargueiros, estes navios foram depois reconvertidos em navios de passageiros em 1957 e fizeram a linha do Pacífico Sul e cruzeiros.

MONTEREY former MSC classic cruise ship

Steam turbine cruise ship MONTEREY photographed in the Mediterranean in April 2006 on her final season before sale to Alang for scrap later that year.

First two photos in Barcelona on 24 April, the others in Civitavecchia on 27 April.

OCEANIC behind MONTEREY.
Both ships gone and scrapped after long, varied and useful lives as passenger ships.

Conjunto de fotografias do antigo paquete MONTEREY, uma das primeiras unidades a integrar a frota da MSC CRUISES e entretanto já substituído e desmantelado.

O MONTEREY foi inicialmente um navio de carga norte americano, construído em 1952 e convertido em navio de passageiros para a companhia MATSON LINES, de S. Francisco,em 1955-56, tendo-se destinado à carreira Califórnia - Hawai - Nova Zelândia - Austrália.

Posteriormente foi operado pela Pacific Far East Lines e pela Aloha Pacific Cruises, até ser vendido em Março de 1990 a interesses ligados a MSC e integrado na frota da Lauro Cruises, passando a operar com o ACHILLE LAURO.
Com o afundamento deste no oceano Indico em Dezembro de 1994, no ano seguinte os cruzeiros da Lauro passaram a chamar MSC Cruises e o MONTEREY foi pintado com as novas cores.

Navegou ao serviço da MSC até Outubro de 2006 e foi vendido para desmantelar na India no final desse ano (chegou a Alang no início de Novembro de 2006).

MONTEREY in Lisbon July 1990

Ex-American passenger liner and cruise ship MONTEREY photographed in Lisbon 1n July 1990 while on her first series of cruises based in the Mediterranean after she was purchased by interests associated to the Mediterranean Shipping Company Group. She looked particularly beautiful in StarLauro funnel colours... 

Constructed in 1952 as the U.S. Maritime Commission C4-type cargo liner FREE STATE MARINER, she was purchased by Matson Lines in 1955 and rebuilt as the passenger liner MONTEREY for South Pacific service and cruising as off January 1957.

In 1971 she was sold to Pacific Far East Lines and continued operating under the US flag until January 1978. After a long spell of lay up the MONTEREY was rebuilt and modernized for full time cruising by Tacoma Boatbuilding and  Wartsila for a new US operator, Aloha Pacific Cruises and introduced in 1988 on cruises in Hawaian waters. This ventured did not last for long and in May 1989 MONTEREY was laid up again, in Honolulu until sold in March 1990 to Star Lauro and the MSC Group. In Italian hands the MONTEREY gained another spell of life cruising for 16 years mostly in the Mediterranean until sold for scrap in India in late 2006. See more LMC photos of the MONTEREY here.

N/T SAMEIRO largando de Lisboa

Navio-tanque SAMEIRO (II), da SOPONATA - Sociedade Portuguesa de Navios Tanques, largando de Lisboa em lastro na tarde de 4 de Dezembro de 1991, saindo provavelmente com destino a Sines.

Construído em Itália em 1977, o SAMEIRO era um navio de transporte de produtos refinados - pretos - distinguindo-se do seu irmão gémeo SÃO MAMEDE pela proa.

Atracados à estação marítima de Alcântara podem ver-se os navios de cruzeiros BLACK PRINCE (Fred. Olsen) e MONTEREY (Lauro). O BLACK PRINCE foi o pioneiro da Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines e o MONTEREY foi o segundo navio da companhia italiana Star Lauro, antecessora da actual MSC CRUISES.

Na altura seria impossível prever que 22 anos depois não existiria em Portugal um único navio petroleiro oceânico mercante. Já então se desbravavam os caminhos sinuosos da DESMARITIMIZAÇÃO que contribuíram decididamente para o nosso actual empobrecimento colectivo. Quando olho para trás e para a maneira como se voltaram as costas ao mar e se deu cabo literalmente de tudo, tenho vontade de parafrasear o Capitão Haddock ou pior ainda, chamar tudo e mais alguma coisa a esta corja ignorante e desclassificada que teima em não nos deixar em paz. E ainda por cima, "eles comem tudo, eles comem tudo..."
