S.S. ARGENTINA of 1929

Bill Miller recalls The Good Neighbor Fleet: "In the early ‘50s, Moore McCormack Lines ran three liners to the East Coast of South America. There was a sailing every other week, usually at 12 Noon on Fridays, on 38-day itineraries. Here we see the Argentina, dating from 1929, but making a late afternoon arrival in the Hudson River. She was bound for Pier 32, Canal Street. Her sisters were the Brazil & Uruguay."



The original trio of liners gave way to a pair of brand new white sisters with turbine engines aftt. According to Bill, "to increase their profitability, the 1958-built sisters Argentina and Brasil of the New York-based Moore-McCormack Lines were rebuilt in 1963 with extended upper decks. Even their funnels were reshaped somewhat. Some thought the twin, 553-passenger sisterships lost their original good looks. Here's the 617-ft long Argentina in Norway in the summer of 1969. She was on a 35-night Northlands Cruise at the time.

Favorite Cruise: A friend once told me that his favorite voyage (out of 100 or so) was in the 1960s: a 35-night Northlands cruise from New York onboard the Argentina. Carrying only 550 or so passengers, she had a clubby feel onboard he said."

Passenger liners off Zanzibar

Union-Castle Line's RMS DURBAN CASTLE (1938-1962) anchored off Zanzibar late in her career. Moore McCormarck then brand-new SS BRASIL of 1958 can be seen offshore on one of her long distance cruises from New York. DIFICULDADES NO MOVIMENTO MARÍTIMO DO PORTO DE LISBOA

Ao princípio da manhã de ontem não havia um único cais vago no porto de Lisboa em consequência de intenso movimento que ultimamente se tem verificado com a atracação de barcos no Tejo.
Assim, o «Angra do Heroísmo», da carreira dos Açores, que havia entrado no Tejo às primeiras horas do dia, teve de aguardar, fundeado, até às 14 horas, que um «ferry-boat» acostasse a ele para o desembarque dos passageiros.
Entretanto, verifica-se o seguinte movimento portuário: na Estação Marítima de Alcântara está fundeado o navio inglês «Nevasa», com 1188 turistas vindo de Liverpool; e o italiano «Caribia», proveniente da América Central, que saiu às 14 e 30 para Vigo. Na Rocha do Conde de Óbidos estiveram atracados o paquete inglês «Avalon», com 302 excursionistas; o americano «Brasil», com 360 passageiros, que partiu ontem às 18 horas para Vigo; e vindo de África, o «Infante Dom Henrique», com 1068 pessoas. No mesmo cais, que se encontra pejado de mercadorias e bagagens, esteve atracado ainda o paquete inglês «Chusan», com 1000 passageiros, que partiu ontem à tarde.
