EBORENSE - Veterano do Tejo

O SANTA MARIA MANUELA e o Mar

Lugre SANTA MARIA MANUELA

MSC FANTASIA in Lisbon

The Port of Lisbon welcomed today 12 December 2008 a brand new ship fresh from the shipyard: the MSC FANTASIA on her first call ever following delivery in St. Nazaire.
She has the same look as her fleetmates but is much larger. The photos show the MSC FANTASIA berthed at the Alcântara cruise terminal, Lisbon.
Forty four years ago another then brand new ship just delivered in St. Nazaire made a similar maiden call in Lisbon, the SHALOM of Zim Lines on her delivery voyage to Haifa.

MSC FANTASIA DELIVERED

MSC unveils the Fantasia. 11 December 2008. MSC Cruises received its flagship MSC Fantasia, dubbed ‘the most beautiful ship in the world’, yesterday at a hand-over ceremony at the STX France shipyard in St Nazaire, France. At the tender age of four, the godmother at the flag ceremony was Asia Aponte, granddaughter of MSC Cruises owner Gianluigi Aponte. MSC Cruises’s CEO Pierfrancesco Vago,
and Jacques Hardelay, General Manager of the shipyard, were also present.
The official handover of the flagship from the shipyard to MSC Cruises saw the lowering of the French flag and the flag of STX France, and the raising of the MSC Cruises flag, along with the flags of Italy and Panama.
At the ceremony, Mr Vago said: “I am particularly proud to launch this new ship, which is a revolution in the cruising world, due to the technologically advanced systems on board. Not only does MSC Fantasia stand out for her technical innovations, but also for her environmentally-friendly systems and structure.
“This ship will capture the imagination of every single guest who comes onboard, as she is a destination in herself and so beautifully designed. She features the stunning MSC Yacht Club, which introduces a new concept in luxury sailing, and our signature MSC Aurea Spa, for the ultimate in well-being.
“With so much choice of activities and entertainment on board this visually stunning ship, I am sure you will agree MSC Fantasia truly is the most beautiful ship in the world,” Mr Vago added.
The largest ship in the fleet with a total passenger capacity of 3,959, MSC Fantasia introduces a new class of cruising with MSC Yacht Club, a luxury area with 24-hour butler and concierge service.
MSC Fantasia is the sixth new build for MSC Cruises from STX France. Her sister ship MSC Splendida will join the fleet in July 2009, to be followed by three further ships – MSC Magnifica, MSC Meraviglia and MSC Favolosa – by 2012, giving MSC Cruises the fastest-growing and most
modern fleet in the world.
Following the flag ceremony, MSC Fantasia sails to Italy via Lisbon, Gibraltar, Alicante, Barcelona and Marseilles, to reach Naples, where she will be christened on 18 December. After her inaugural cruise, she will be based in Genoa sailing the Mediterranean year-round.

ISLAND ESCAPE IN BUZIOS

Ainda me lembro do gémeo NRP PEDRO NUNES no Arsenal do Alfeite em 1972.

The HANSEATIC (II) ex SHALOM of 1964

Purchased in 1967 from Zim Lines to replace the original HANSEATIC ex-Empress of Scotland, the SHALOM became the HANSEATIC operating in the North Atlantic but mostly cruising. I ship I was able to see and photograph many times in Lisbon under several names. In 1973 she was sold to Home Lines becaming the DORIC in order to replace another veteran damaged by fire, the HOMERIC.

ALERTA NO CAIS DO SODRÉ

ROTTERDAM SHIPPING IN THE FIFTIES

Two interesting B&W photographs of the Port of Rotterdam showing Holland America Line passenger ships and cargo liners as well: the NIEUW AMSTERDAM is about to sail for New York while either Maasdam or her sister is at alongside. Photograph taken in the early to mid fifties, before the NEIUW AMSTERDAM had the hull repainted grey.
On the lower photo a wartime Victory-class cargo ship in HAL colours can also be seen berthed in Rotterdam

Lancha ANGRA UAM 637

The HANSEATIC (I) of 1958-1966

The magnificent German passenger liner HANSEATIC of 1958 docked in Hamburg.
Built by Fairfields at Glasgow in 1929 - 1930 for Canadian Pacific as EMPRESS OF JAPAN, she was renamed EMPRESS OF SCOTLAND in 1942 and sold to Hamburg Atlantic Line in January 1958 and modernized in Hamburg.
She was damaged by fire on 7 September 1966 in New York and sold for scrap the following December.
A new liner had been ordered to replace her in 1969, so in the meantime the SHALOM was purchased in 1967 becoming the second HANSEATIC. This second ship was joined in 1969 by a new flagship, the HAMBURG, actual MAXIM GORKIY.
To the left another passenger liner can also be seen, the ARGENTINA or one of her two sisters.

Eight December is Our Lady of the Conception's day. The oldest Portuguese shipping company still active, Empresa de Navegação Madeirense of Funchal, Madeira Island whose ships up to 1968had all Our Lady of the Conception as Godmother. Below we present the data and history of Madeirense's first ship, the schooner SENHORA DA CONCEIÇÃO.

SENHORA DA CONCEIÇÃO 1907-1917

Escuna de 2 mastros construída de madeira em 1875. Nº oficial: 875; Indicativo visual: HJTP. Armador: Dª. Carolina Amélia Martins da Silva, Funchal. Operador: Sr. João Martins da Silva, Funchal. Arqueação bruta: 206,44 toneladas; Arqueação líquida: 196,12 toneladas; Comprimento: 30,26 m; Boca: 7,16 m; Pontal: 3,88 m. Tripulantes: 8.

Wooden two-masted schooner built 1875. Official number: 875; Signal letters: HJTP. Shipowner: Mrs Carolina Amélia Martins da Silva, Funchal, Madeira Island. Manager: Mr João Martins da Silva, Funchal. Gross tonnage: 206.44 tons; Net tonnage: 196.12 tons; Length: 30.26 m; Breadth: 7.16 m; Depth: 3.88 m. Crew: 8. Price paid: 3,000$000 Reis.

The schooner SENHORA DA CONCEIÇÃO was built by Philip & Son Limited, in Dartmouth, England, and launched in the river Dart on 21-08-1875 as RIPPLE, for Putt, Drew and Co., Brixham, where she was registered on 11-08-1875. Official: 71867; Gross tonnage: 172 tons; Net tonnage: 163 tons. In 06-1888 the schooner RIPPLE was sold to Francisco Henriques, Madeira Island, and registered at Funchal as ESPERANÇA. She was resold on the same year to Francisco Rodrigues & Cia., Lisbon, and registered in Lisbon on 1-08-1888. On 29-04-1907 Mr João Martins da Silva, a businessman from Funchal, purchased the schooner ESPERANÇA. He registered her in Funchal on 18-05-1907 as SENHORA DA CONCEIÇÃO, under the ownership of Mrs Carolina Amélia Martins da Silva, his wife, for “short sea and ocean trading”. The purchase of this ship represents the start of the shipping business that led to the present Empresa de Navegação Madeirense, Lda., as the SENHORA DA CONCEIÇÃO was the initial merchant ship in the fleet of J. M. da Silva, the founder of Empresa Madeirense. Trading mainly between Madeira and the Mainland Portugal, the SENHORA DA CONCEIÇÃO sailed from Funchal on 24-05-1907 on her first voyage to Lisbon under the management of J. M. da Silva, returning to Funchal on 14-06 “with a diverse range of cargo for this Island”. The SENHORA DA CONCEIÇÃO was torpedoed and sunk on 19-04-1917, by the German submarine U 52 (Kapitanleutnant Hans Walther) in the Bay of Biscay, off the NW coast of Spain, while on a voyage from France to Funchal with a cargo of sulphur. The crew of 8 reached Gijon, Spain.

MAXIM GORKIY TO RETURN TO HAMBURG?

Seatrade Insider 2/12/2008: A number of German shipping executives including Hamburg Cruise Centre director Dirk Moldenhauer and Dr Stefan Behn, member of the board of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) are supporting an idea to bring Maxim Gorkiy back to Hamburg to be used as a floating hotel and congress centre berthed on the Elbe River in the city centre.
The ship was launched in the city in 1968 as Hamburg and her godmother was Marie-Luise Kiesinger, wife of Germany's then Chancellor Kurt Georg Kiesinger.
According to local newspaper Hamburger Abendblatt Hans Lafrenz, member of the federal state parliament of Hamburg, is also named as a supporter of the project as is a Dusseldorf-based investor, although it is unclear what the costs will be.
The newpaper quotes Dr Behn saying that 'the ship is still in brilliant shape' having retained much of its original interior from the late 1960s.
Maxim Gorkiy is also considered to be one of the symbols of Germany's Reunification: In December 1989, a few weeks after the fall of the Berlin Wall - she served as a floating conference venue for the heads of state of the USSR and the US, Mikhail Gorbachev and George Bush, off Malta.
More recently the ship has gained popularity operating on charter to Bonn-based Phoenix Reisen. The long-term charter of the steam-turbine ship expired last weekend when her final voyage in Phoenix livery ended in Venice.
The ship was to have been taken into drydock this month for work including SOLAS 2010 updates, and to emerge for her maiden voyage as Marco Polo II next April for new owner, the ,new' Orient Lines. but last month the company reported the relaunch of Orient Lines has now been put off until the world financial situation improves.
