CAPITANIA DE CASCAIS

Bonito escudo impecavelmente preservado na fachada do edifício da Capitania de Cascais, cuja traça nos relega para a arquitectura dos tempos do Estado Novo. Hoje o cargo de Capitão do Porto de Cascais é assegurado pelo Capitão do Porto de Lisboa.

MASTRO DA CIDADELA

Talvez por ter vivido numa Ilha onde havia a tradição de algumas casas terem mastros de sinais, provável resquício da antiga
Esquadra Naval Terrestre, sempre fique fiquei fascinado por mastro, tanto instalados em navios como em terra.
Este, integra a CIDADELA DE CASCAIS e está ao abandono, por pintar e apenas com uma adriça. Um local com a localização privilegiada e a tradição marítima de Cascais justificam mais carinho pelos elementos náuticos da "paisagem", aqui ficando um "aviso aos navegantes" camarários para que se dignifique este belo mastro e passe a ser içada na sua carangueja uma grande bandeira nacional. Este mastro é um dos mais bonitos de Portugal.

FUNCHAL in Lisbon

Portuguese cruise ship FUNCHAL returned to a lay up berth at Santa Apolónia, in Lisbon after a spell of two and a half months at Trafaria. She was laid up in October for the winter and returns to cruise service at the end of March 2010 with a new programm of cruises from Lisbon geared to the Portuguese market. Photos taken on 7 January 2010, the first sunny day registered in Lisbon this year.

FUNCHAL em Lisboa 2010-01-07

O paquete FUNCHAL está novamente atracado em Lisboa depois de mais de 2 meses imobilizado na Trafaria.
O navio vai permanecer no Tejo em situação de imobilização comercial até Março de 2010, quando regressa ao serviço com uma série de cruzeiros para o mercado português com largada de Lisboa. No primeiro dia de sol deste ano de 2010 (7 de Janeiro) em Lisboa ,fomos fotografar o FUNCHAL atracado em Santa Apolónia, aqui partilhando algumas das imagens.

The same funnel, different colours...

The same funnel in different colours: which one is the best looking livery? Saga Cruises Yellow, white and blue or the traditional Cunard red and black?

As built as NAL VISTAFJORD, it was buff with the national colours of Norway.

Anyway, yellow or red she is now one of the best looking classic passenger ships still in service...

Paquete PÁTRIA (1947-1973)

Paquete a turbinas a vapor PÁTRIA construído em 1946-47 em Clydebank no estaleiro John Brown, para a Companhia Colonial de Navegação. Entregue em Dezembro de 1947, foi o primeiro dos navios de passageiros do Despacho 100 a entrar ao serviço e o primeiro paquete novo a integrar a frota da Companhia Colonial de Navegação. Era idêntico ao IMPÉRIO.
Construído expressamente para a carreira da África Oriental, fez ainda diversas viagens nas linhas do Brasil e América Central. Mais imagens e informações relativas ao PÁTRIA aqui.

SOUTHERN FERRIES' EAGLE

Following the first spell of ferry services between Southampton and Lisbon in 1966 by SUNWARD, the service was later resumed by Normandy Ferries sisters LEOPARD and DRAGON and in May 1971 both ships were replaced by a purpose-built cruise ferry, the EAGLE.

She was operated by a new company owned by General Steam Navigation Company, Southern Ferries, both P&O Group companies. The naming system was the same used by GSNC: names of animals.

Top photo shows the EAGLE as built with blue band on the hull, and the lower photo shows the DRAGON. Both were sailing under the British flag while LEOPARD was registered in France.

A MEMORABLE DAY

Maurizio Eliseo sent me the following photographs and words concerning a memorable event: the floating-out of the newest Cunarder, the QUEEN ELIZABETH, in Monfalcone, near Trieste on 5 January 2010:

"Photographs of the ceremony of today for the float-out of the new Queen Elizabeth. The lady in red is the "madrina", Mrs F.M.G. Farmer. The group photo shows, from left to right,Cunard's Presindend and CEO, the Fincantieri Monfalcone yard Director, M.E. (organizer of the heritage tour and of the press material for the event), and the ship's sponsor. The heritage trail was organised with memorabilia from the Maurizio Eliseo and the Paolo Piccione Collection.

Navios de construção portuguesa

Dois exemplos actuais de navios construídos em Portugal: o paquete LOBO MARINHO de 2003, cujo casco foi subcontratado ao estrangeiro pelos Estaleiros Navais de Viana o Castelo, e o SCHULTZ XAVIER, saído das carreiras do Arsenal do Alfeite em 1971.

SCHULTZ XAVIER na Madeira

Construído em 1971 pelo Arsenal do Alfeite, o Navio-balizador NRP SCHULTZ XAVIER encontra-se mais uma vez baseado no Funchal em comissão de serviço em águas da Região Autónoma da Madeira, de certa forma substituindo os Patrulhas da classe CACINE que desde à década de 1970 vêm assegurando esta missão e cuja classe está já substancialmente reduzida as 10 unidades originais a apenas 3 navios no activo.

Assim o SCHULTZ XAVIER vem assegurando a presença da Marinha na Madeira como Patrulha. Trata-se de uma unidade de concepção e construção nacional, basicamente um rebocador de alto-mar, apetrechado com uma grua. Apresenta linhas arquitectónicas tipicamente portuguesas, sendo dos últimos exemplares de uma época em que a origem dos navios se manifestava pelo seu aspecto exterior.

A proa e a chaminé, por exemplo, são semelhantes às de outros navios de construção portuguesa dos anos 1950 e 1960, como o paquete PONTA DELGADA, por exemplo, denotando o espírito "Português Suave" da época. As janelas da ponte de comando em latão são uma preciosidade.

NEW YEAR's CRUISE SHIPPING in MADEIRA

I have just returned from a short photographic break in Madeira Island where I arrived on 29 December to see and photograph the cruise ships gathering for the usual New Year's eve festivities.

On 31 December 2009 there where seven passenger ships in port: AIDALUNA, AMADEA, BOUDICCA, LOBO MARINHO, ORIANA, QUEEN VICTORIA and SAGA RUBY. The handsome sailing ship ASTRID was also in port and some of the images registered are published in this and adjoining posts. Hope they are of interest.

I wish a very happy New Year of 2010 for all...

ORIANA in Funchal

ORIANA arrived late in Funchal at 1 PM on 31 December 2009 and the QUEEN VICTORIA gave her berth and went to the harbour anchorage very close to the shore at Barreirinha.
ORIANA stayed overnight and sailed the next day for La Palma.

FIM DE ANO 2009-2010

Para mim, mais que o tradicional fogo de artifício, a atracção do Fim de Ano no Funchal é a frota de navios de cruzeiros que sempre marca presença em águas madeirenses no último dia de cada ano.
A 31 de Dezembro de 2009 brilharam muitas luzes de bordo dos paquetes AIDALUNA, AMADEA, BODICCA, ORIANA, QUEEN VICTORIA e SAGA RUBY, dos quais apresentamos uma selecção de imagens...

She was sailing with a full load of passengers...
VOLCAN DE TIJARAFE cals Funchal regularly on Saturdays and Mondays and has become very popular in Madeira.
