PACIFIC DREAM off Lisbon Pilots

Every Sunday morning, the PACIFIC DREAM arrives off Lisbon Pilots Station at Algés, to embark the local pilot at the end of another regular 7-day cruise from Lisbon to Gibraltar, Casablanca, Agadir, Lanzarote and Funchal.
This last Sunday, 19 July the Pilot boarded the PACIFIC at about 6h36 AM as registered in the photographs. On such early arrivals sometimes it is very difficult to photograph the ships, but nobody cares for the needs of shipspotters...

PACIFIC DREAM docking in Lisbon

With the harbour pilot onboard, the PACIFIC DREAM moves upstream on the river Tagus and docks at the Rocha Cruise Terminal, where forty years ago the Companhia Colonial liners departed for Africa, the Americas or on cruises.
In the photograph taken at about 7h04 AM, the PACIFIC DREAM prepares do berth at Rocha, wher she will turn around before departing again at 17h00.

LOOKER 350 no Tejo

No Domingo 19 de Julho de 2009 registámos pela primeira vez a presença no Tejo de uma embarcação de recreio rápida de aspecto ortodoxo: trata-se de um LOOKER 350 de concepção e projecto russo, com casco parcialmente em vidro e propulsão por sistema de "hidrofoil".
A dita embarcação, patrocinada por uma agência de comunicação, andou em evoluções rápidas pelo Tejo e em dada altura colou-se ao paquete PACIFIC DREAM, prejudicando muito as fotografias que tentei fazer da saída do referido paquete. O site do fabricante do LOOKER 350 pode ser visto aqui.

QUEENS NO TEJO

A retirada de serviço do veterano da Cunard em 2008 - falamos claro do QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 - levou a uma redução na presença de navios desta prestigiada companhia em Lisboa, mas os QUEENS continuam a marcar presença no Tejo, com 15 escalas já anunciadas no futuro próximo nas datas a seguir indicadas segundo os navios respectivos:
- QUEEN MARY 2: 16-09-2008, 13-01-2010 e 29-09-2010 ;
- QUEEN VICTORIA: 23-07-2009, 2-12-2009, 22-12-2009, 6-05-2010, 29-10-2010, 23-12-2010, 11-04-2011 ;
- QUEEN ELIZABETH: 15-10-2010 (viagem inaugural), 4-12-2010.

FLANDRE and COLOMBIE

Harbour photography use to provide very stimulating pictures of ships in their element. The adjoining photograph of the port of Le Havre in the 1950s shows two of the French Line passenger ships then homeported at this famous French port: FLANDRE and COLOMBIE. The second was replaced on the West Indies service by the first one after sale to Greece in 1964 and both had long careers ending in Greek hands...

USS EISENHOWER de novo no Tejo

Lisboa acolheu uma vez mais, de 14 a 17 de Julho, o porta-aviões americano da classe “Nimitz” USS D EISENHOWER", lançado ao mar em 1975. Tem embarcada uma guarnição de 4.200 elementos, apresentando 333 m de comprimento e 77 m de boca, podendo embarcar 90 aviões entre caças, aviões de guerra electrónica e helicópteros.
Para assegurar o desembarque da guarnição foi montado um “vaivém” privativo de cacilheiros, com local de desembarque no terrapleno de Algés, onde não falta um posto de controlo com “catering” permanente dirigido a todos os que entrem ou saiam dos mesmos.
Mais uma vez o Porto de Lisboa volta a ser escolhido por este tipo de navios devido aos seus elevados padrões de segurança e capacidade logística de apoio a embarcações e tripulações desta dimensão. De referir a importância económica local deste tipo de escalas, que se vêm realizando anualmente, com os navios fundeados em frente à Cova do Vapor sob a protecção discreta da Marinha Portuguesa, que destacou para as proximidades do porta-aviões a corveta JOÃO COUTINHO e diversas unidades de menor porte.

PRINCESS DAPHNE in the Baltic

Classic International Cruises PRINCESS DAPHNE photographed yesterday (15 July 2009) berthed in Warnemunde, the German Baltic port near Berlin. Photo kindly sent by my friend Manfred Weiss.
The last ship to have joined the fleet managed by Mr. George Potamianos, in November 2007, this ship was built in 1954-1955 in Newcastle for Port Line, London, as the cargo passenger liner PORT SYDNEY. She operated between North Europe and Australia - New Zealand until 1972 when sold to Greek interests "en bloc" with her sister PORT MELBOURNE, also now a member of Classic International Cruises fleet as PRINCESS DANAE. Renamed AKROTIRI EXPRESS by J.C. Karras, she was taken to the Chalkis shipyard for rebuilding into a passenger ferry in August 1972 but plans were reconsidered and she was rebuilt as the cruise ship DAPHNE a process that took three years and led to a maiden cruise from Marseilles in July 1975. She was joined by sistership DANAE in 1977 and both ships were operated world wide by Karras Cruises until chartered to Costa in 1979. Purchased in 1984 and renamed SWITZERLAND in 1996, OCEAN ODYSSEY and OCEAN MONARCH in 2002, becoming the PRINCESS DAPHNE in November 2008.

Lisboa acordou esta manhã cheia de navios, com destaque para o mais belo paquete do século XXI, o QUEEN MARY 2 que faz hoje, 15 de Julho de 2009, mais uma das suas já habituais escalas entre nós, tendo atracado a Alcântara. Larga pelas 18h00.

AUSONIA in Lisbon

If built today she would have been designed as a cruise ferry: the beautiful passenger steamship AUSONIA introduced by Adriatica in 1957 in their Venice to Alexandria express liner service was something like the Italian Mediterranean flagship.
She survived all other mighty post-war Italian liners in active service and in later years has been owned by Louis Cruises of Cyprus.

Cargueiros clássicos

Até há uns tantos anos atrás, os cargueiros eram uma espécie de armazéns flutuantes cheios de porões, cobertas e uma parafernália completa de aparelhos de carga. Hoje o chamado navio de carga geral está em vias de desaparecer, mas há uns meses tive oportunidade de fotografar uns tantos pormenores do cargueiro argelino IBN SINA II e registar os elementos arquitectónicos mais interessantes...

Uma das centenas de imagens então registadas mostra o FUNCHAL em manobra de atracação na Ponta da Rocha, cruzando-se com a Caravela VERA CRUZ.

Paquete UIGE de 1954

O navio de passageiros e carga UIGE integrou a frota da Companhia Colonial de Navegação em 1954 e foi concebido para o transporte de passageiros em classe turística e carga entre Portugal e Angola.
Era o paquete mais utilitário de entre os 6 que constituíram a frota final da CCN e acabou os seus dias imobilizado no Mar da Palha, em Lisboa a partir de 1986, sendo demolido em Alhos Vedros em 1989.
Foi um dos navios mais utilizados no transporte de tropas para o Ultramar entre 1961 e 1975 e segundo a minha Avó, era um navio muito simpático...
Ficha técnica e biografia deste paquete disponível no DICIONÁRIO DE NAVIOS PORTUGUESES. Na época o nome deste paquete foi uma homenagem à região do UIGE no Norte de Angola, onde o armador Bernardino Correia tinha fazendas. A "MARINHA" da GNR

Quem teima em dizer que não somos um País de Marinheiros, engana-se redondamente. Somos terra de Marinheiros e Marinhas: Marinha de Guerra, Marinha de Pesca, Marinha de Comércio, Marinha do Tejo e... MARINHA DA GNR.
Na imagem, tirada a 12 de Junho de 2009, a lancha AZÓIA (LVI 14) entra na Doca de Alcântara no cumprimento de uma missão não especificada. Trata-se de uma unidade da Brigada Fiscal. Assim percebo para onde vai tanto dinheiro de impostos.

Com a desmaritimização que tem vindo a descaracterizar Lisboa nas últimas décadas, desapareceram muitos elementos arquitectónicos ligados às diversas funcionalidades dos navios e do porto. CANBERRA leaving Lisbon

P&O CANBERRA of 1961 departing from Lisbon on 28 September 1996. The final masterpiece from the famous Harland & Wolff Belfast shipyards, she was a trend setter for most of her long career as a passenger liner and cruise ship with a spell in the South Atlantic as a troopship in 1982. By 1996 she is near the end of her long life for a P&O ship and only one more year of cruise service is left before her final voyage East to the breakers in Pakistan. In 1996 her profile was outdated, but at the time I could not notice it. She was always one of my favorite ships of the 1960s.

O mundo é feito de mudanças ganhando-se sempre novas qualidades por entre a voragem dos dias que passam e as modas politiqueiramente correctas de agora. Um velho guindaste com os seus dias contados e o fumo de um navio por cenário. Fumo de um navio, essa criatura que poderia classificar de "o melhor amigo do homem depois do cão". A memória portuária dos tempos da Ode Marítima em vias de extinção. Faltam as novas qualidades que tardam em reabilitar os navios e o mar entre nós...

Os novos "barcos do Barreiro"

A nova frota de "Barcos do Barreiro" que em 2004 substituiu os tradicionais navios de passageiros da CP não tem a beleza do ALENTEJO ou os nervos do TUNES, mas proporciona uma ligação rápida e confortável entre o Terreiro do Paço e o Barreiro.
As imagens apresentam o DAMIÃO DE GOIS, a navegar no dia 9 de Julho de 2009. Trata-se de um dos catamarans construídos em Singapura segundo projecto holandês.

Revisiting the CAP SAN DIEGO

One of the many shipping attractions in the port of Hamburg, the cargo liner CAP SAN DIEGO is preserved as a museum ship certified for trading. There are not too many like her left... Photos taken in Hamburg on 27 September 2008.

DUTCH EMERALD in the Tagus

The chemical tanker DUTCH EMERALD berthed at Porto Brandão, a tanker port in the South bank of the river Tagus in front of Lisbon.

CASSIOPEIA no Tejo

Lancha CASSIOPEIA (P1153) fotografada no Tejo a 8 de Julho de 2009, em missão de escolta aos navios visitantes da Armada da India. Desde há algum tempo, os navios de guerra estrangeiros de visita a Lisboa são recebidos fora da barra do Tejo normalmente por uma lancha rápida da Marinha, muitas vezes complementada com uma lancha da Polícia Marítima.
