Fifty years ago, in February 1957 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II paid her first official visit to Portugal arriving in Lisbon aboard the Royal Yacht BRITANNIA. The Queen boarded the yacht at Setubal and did the voyage to Lisbon escorted by British and Portuguese naval vessels. On her second visit in the late eighties, the BRITANNIA was used exactly the same way and two frigates JOÃO BELO-class and the MAGALHÃES CORRÊA were the escorts.
Of all the ships I have been able to photograph over the last 35 years no other was so attractive and spotless as the BRITANNIA. In the photo published with this post she was berthed at the Ponta da Rocha in June 1991.
The Royal Yacht BRITANNIA was decommissioned on 11th December 1997 and is preserved in Leith, Scotland, as a museum ship.
