SANTA MARIA AT FORT LAUDERDALE

My beloved liner SANTA MARIA of 1953 was one of the first passenger ships to call at Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades), on a regular basis in the fifties. The CCN ship was employed on the Central America service sailing from Lisbon to Vigo, Funchal and Tenerife, then she would cross the Atlantic for La Guaira, Curacao, Havana and Port Everglades, the Cuba call being replaced by San Juan de Puerto Rico after the Fidel revolution.
The complete round trip was a wonderful cruise taking about one month. The ship used to sail from Lisbon every forty days and there were 10 round voyages per year, the final one in April 1973.
