Delivery of the first Class 209PN Submarine for the Portuguese Navy

On June 17, 2010, N.R.P. TRIDENTE, the first of two Class 209PN submarines for the
Portuguese Navy, was delivered on the premises of Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft – a company of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems – in Kiel.
The new submarine has a combined diesel-electric fuel cell propulsion system. Class
209PN combines the proven design principles of the Class 209 family with the innovative
features of Class 214. Equipped with ultra-modern sensors and an integrated Command
and Weapon Control System, it is optimally suited to its future reconnaissance and
surveillance tasks.
The contract for the two submarines was signed in 2004 with the Portuguese. Start of
production for N.R.P. TRIDENTE was March 7, 2005, the naming ceremony took place in
July 2008. The second submarine, named N.R.P. ARPÃO on June 18, 2009, is currently
undergoing sea trials.
