One of the greatest shipping concerns of the world in the first quarter of the twentieth century, Royal Mail and Pacific Steam were taken over by Furness in about 1965 and their activities were slowly reduced and the fleets disposed off in a matter of a few years.
Both companies had a long tradition in Portuguese waters with their South America regular lines.
