My good friend, fellow liner enthusiast & another Hobokenite Mike Tattoli remembered: I would sneak onboard the Stevens dorm ship (the former combo liner Exochorda) & watch the liners go by on Saturday. I also would sneak onto the pier at 4th Street [also in Hoboken], where they filmed "On the Waterfront". I would go to the end, sit on the edge, & eat my Jumbo's roast beef & fries sandwich. Boy, was that great! In fact, for a while in the late 70's, there was a supertanker, I believe Mobil, at the adjoining 3rd Street pier. I tried to get on her, but never made it.
In this photo, taken from Hoboken on a Saturday afternoon in April 1971, the very handsome Cristoforo Colombo was outbound following a 4 o'clock sailing from Luxury Liner Row. Sister ship to the immortal Andrea Doria, this 1954-built, the 1,250-bed, three-class ship was surrounded in romance -- the romance of the sea and the sun. She was off on the "Sunny Southern Route," to Ponta Delgada, Lisbon, Gibraltar, Malaga, Naples, Messina, Piraeus, Dubrovnik, Venice & Trieste. Sheer magic!
