Paquete FUNCHAL aguarda decisão novamente

Apesar do leilão de 5 de Dezembro ter resultado na venda do Paquete FUNCHAL ao grupo hoteleiro e imobiliário britânico SIGNATURE LIVING, de Liverpool, ao contrário das expectativas então criadas, o navio continua na Matinha no seu quinto ano de imobilização na sequência do encerramento da PORTUSCALE CRUISES de Rui Alegre.

Chegou a ser anunciado o projecto de renovação do FUNCHAL para cruzeiros Pop no Mediterrâneo, com nova decoração, mas aparentemente supostos investidores terão perdido o entusiasmo inicial, o que levou a dificuldades de pagamento dos €3.9 milhões de Euros, com ainda mais de 1 milhão por pagar, apesar de três acordos suplementares assinados com o administrador da falência, o último terminado a 8 de Julho. Caso a SIGNATURE LIVING não pague a parcela ainda em falta, no final desta semana o contrato deverá ser anulado e consideradas outras propostas de interessados na aquisição do FUNCHAL. Para já continua de fora a possibilidade de o navio ser vendido para sucata.

O Paquete FUNCHAL é um dos mais populares navios mercantes portugueses do século XX, tendo entrado ao serviço em 1961 e conhecido enorme sucesso, em especial no mercado de cruzeiros internacionais já no último quartel do século passado e pela mão sabedora e dedicada de George Potamianos, armador distinto e grande amigo de Portugal e do FUNCHAL. 

Os últimos anos não têm sorrido ao FUNCHAL: em 2010 imobilizou em Lisboa para ser modernizado, ainda sob a orientação de G. Potamianos, mas dificuldades conjunturais levaram à suspensão dos trabalhos em 2011. Com o falecimento do Armador, as empresas faliram em Novembro de 2012 e os navios ficaram sob alçada do banco Montepio, que promoveu a criação de uma nova empresa, em 2013, na sequência do que Rui Alegre forma a Portuscale em 2013 e promove a reactivação do FUNCHAL, que navegou com sucesso moderado, de Agosto de 2013 a Janeiro de 2015. O FUNCHAL aguarda desde essa altura um destino, que se quer digno... Pelos vistos, a história permanece com um capítulo em aberto. Da última vez que passei pela Matinha, reparei que, pelo sim, pelo não, o 112 estava junto ao navio, não vá ser preciso alguma coisa.

Although the auction held on 5 December in Lisbon resulted in the sale of the classic passenger and cruise ship FUNCHAL to the British hotel and real estate group SIGNATURE LIVING, contrary to the expectations then created, the vessel remains alongside the Matinha pier, in its fifth year of lay up pending sale following the closure of PORTUSCALE CRUISES by Rui Alegre. 

Soon after the deal with SIGNATURE LIVING, pop cruises were announced for the FUNCHAL in the Mediterranean, but apparently supposed investors lost their initial enthusiasm, which led to difficulties of payment of € 3.9 million Euros, with still more than 1 million waiting payment despite three additional agreements signed with the bankruptcy trustee, the latter being completed on 8 July. If SIGNATURE LIVING does not pay the amount still in default, by the end of this week the contract is being canceled and other proposals of interested parties in the acquisition of FUNCHAL considered. The possibility of the ship being sold for scrap is still out of the question.

The passenger ship FUNCHAL was one of the most popular Portuguese merchant ships of the twentieth century, having entered service in 1961 and obtaining enormous success, especially in the international cruise market in the last quarter of the last century and by the knowledgeable and dedicated hand of George Potamianos, shipowner and great friend of Portugal and the FUNCHAL.

The last years have not smiled at FUNCHAL however: in 2010 she was withdrawn and laid up in Lisbon to be modernized, still under the guidance of G. Potamianos, but short-term difficulties led to the suspension of works in 2011. With the death of the owner, the companies failed in November 2012 and the ships came under the umbrella of Montepio bank, which promoted the creation of a new company in 2013, following what Rui Alegre established Portuscale in 2013 and promoted the reactivation of FUNCHAL, which was moderately successful, in August 2013 to January 2015. Since then, FUNCHAL has been waiting for a whatever the future holds, in a time when classic ships can not fight the new generations of giant floating resorts. 

The story remains with an open chapter. The last time I passed by Matinha, I noticed that, for whatever reason, a team of 911 (its local equivalent 112) was in place nearby, just in case the old girl in waiting needs assistance. More on the FUNCHAL here
