SAGA RUBY refit at Bremerhaven

The cruise ship SAGA RUBY arrived in Bremerhaven on 15 November from Leixões (Oporto, Portugal), where her cruise was shortened for technical reasons and the passengers disembarked. SAGA RUBY is now at the Kaiser Dock under the attention of Lloyd Werft undergoing extensive class and maintenance work and repairs in order to keep her in tip top conditon for another 13 months of contiuous cruising under the classic livery of SAGA CRUISES before she is taken out of service on January 7 2014. Repairs include the renewal of pipe work, the maintenance of pump, valves and fire-fighting equipment, steel repairs and the repair of cracks to superstructure supports and windows. Other scheduled work includes the cleaning of 16 tanks, the exchange of a generator and the cleaning and conservation of the hull of the ship. On December 4, SAGA RUBY returns to cruise service once more.

CONTRAMESTRE CASADO in Las Palmas

Spanish Navy transport CONTRAMESTRE CASADO photographed in Las Palmas de Grã Canaria on 2nd November 2012.
One of the more interesting ships in the Spanish Navy, the CONTRAMESTRE CASADO  is a living museum ship of some sort as she is a former Swedish reefer, the LEEWARD ISLANDS of 1953, built by Eriksberg in Gothenburg. She was sold in 1964 to Fred. Olsen as the BAJAMAR. Renamed BONZO in 1968, FORTUNA REEFER in 1975 and THANASSIS K in 1982. Under this name she was seized by the Spanish Navy in ilegal activities in the Galician rias and taken to Vigo. Later that year she was taken over by the Spanish Navy and has been a naval transport since 1983. While in Las Palmas, the CONTRAMESTRE CASADO loaded several sailing yachts on her deck.

Bill Miller photographs

Two funnelled passenger liners in NewYork photographed by my friend Bill Miller: the FRANCE sailing for Europe in 1973 and the handsome INDEPENDENCE leaving port in 1967 with the HOMERIC alongside...
Bill Miller writes / I took this photo of the Caribbean-bound Independence on a bitterly cold February afternoon in 1967. She was departing from Pier 84 at West 44th Street in Manhattan. I was using a $10 plastic box camera at that time.
My good friend and fellow Hobokenite Tony La Forgia recalled: I remember the American Export piers in Hoboken and seeing the “Four Aces” [Excalibur, Exeter, Excambion & Exochorda] and later the nuclear-powered Savannah. In winter, the Independence & Constitution were berthed for several weeks at Pier B at the foot of Third Street for wintertime dockside maintenance. With their twin funnels, they towered above the pier’s roof. The Export piers were always busy, sometimes with five or six freighters at dock as well, and smelled of olives and leather and of course grease and oil. This was part of the Hoboken waterfront. Along River Street, the piers would be jammed with loose freight and waiting trucks.

A propósito do Cte. Oliveira e Carmo

EUROPA and DORIC in NY

One of my greatest treats was to visit the grand liners docked along Manhattan's West Side. I took this view in April 1977: the Europa is on the left, the Doric to the right.

The HOMERIC in NY

I took this photo on a bitterly cold February afternoon in 1968. It is a view from the 20th floor of the Sheraton Hotel at the foot of West 42nd Street. The Homeric was sailing at 4pm that afternoon, bound for the warm waters of the Caribbean. The year before, a friend & I did a 3-night "cruise to nowhere" on the very popular Homeric. Indeed, very exciting for ship buffs! The fare was $75 for an inside double.

Crossing on the RAFFAELLO

In the summer of 1973, the Raffaello was booked solid for a 10-night westbound crossing from Naples to New York. She'd also call on that voyage at Genoa, Cannes, Barcelona, Gibraltar & Lisbon. My sister had a boyfriend at the time & he had an uncle who owned a travel agency in Hoboken, but also worked for the Italian Line in their Lower Manhattan offices. His name was Nick De Bari and he managed to find a berth for me in a cabin class double. The fare was $600 or $60 a day. I was, of course, absolutely thrilled.

The old QUEEN MARY

I first stayed aboard the Queen Mary in August 1978. It was fascinating to see the then 42-yr old ship restored and operating. I often hear recollections of the great Cunarder such as these from Mary Hyde.
I remember going to New York for the first time in 1955. I was aboard theQueen Mary. It was the first sailing after a long strike. The ship was off schedule. There were only 600 passengers onboard [out of a possible 2,000]. We had amazing service. My grandparents had been lost on theTitanic and so that voyage on the Queen Mary was a kind of very special connection for me to them. I remember members of the British Fencing Team were allowed to use the cabin class pool even if they were in tourist class, and watching well-dressed passengers dancing in the lounge even as the ship plowed through a gale. I also won $15 at bingo and then used the money to make a ship-to-shore phone call to my parents back home in England. That was a very great treat!"

OCEANIC at New York

I was high above the Hudson, at Stevens campus in Hoboken, when, on a Sat afternoon in June 1977, I caught the outbound cruise ship OCEANIC as it passed a Staten Island ferry. The ferry was not normally on the Hudson, but running a charter jazz cruise as far north as the George Washington Bridge.
