SEA CLOUD back in service

One of the ships at risk of being withdrawn from cruise service due to the SOLAS 2010 was the eldest of today's cruises ships, the four-masted bark SEA CLOUD of 1929. She did spent months refiting in Germany and in early May visited Hamburg to celebrate her return into service.

S.Y. SEA CLOUD in Lisbon

The S.Y. SEA CLOUD, she is one of the most beautiful ships afloat and I was lucky to spend several hours taking photos of her at the Rocha cruise terminal and leaving Lisbon in the evening of 22 April.
S.Y. stands for Sailing Yacht and it is exactly what she was in 1931 when built in Kiel as E. F. Hutton private yacht HUSSAR. In 1935 she became the SEA CLOUD and as such served in WW2 with distinction. By 1955 she became the presidential yacht of the Dominican Republic under the name ANGELITA, and was renamed PATRIA in 1961 following the assassination of the Dictator President.
In 1966 she was sold again to US interests as the ANTARNA and saw eight years of lay up and neglect at Colon before purchase to German interests for cruising as the SEA CLOUD, her activity since 1979. As a cruise ship she has luxurious accomodation for 68 lucky passengers. As a sailing ship she is a four masted barque and her German origins are still very much present in her solid upright looking.

LISBON PILOT BOAT

The pilot boat PONTA DO SALMODO at speed passing the sailing cruise ship SEA CLOUD in Lisbon, 22 April 2007. Photo dedicated to our friend Daniel Malheiro do Vale of the blog PILOT BOAT.
Daniel is the Editor of the APIBARRA newsletter, whose first issue has just been published with news about Portuguese harbour pilots' matters. Nice work Daniel and thanks for sending a copy.
