QE2 final cruises

Passengers of the QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 enjoying the late October afternoon sun in Lisbon yesterday, 29 October 2008 when the famous QE2 paid her pre final call to Lisbon on her way to the Mediterranean on the last cruise from Southampton. The next departure from QE2 home port will have no return.
She will be missed in the Tagus and the rumours about what the new Dubai owners plan to do once she is delivered are disturbing.

QE2 in Lisbon 29-10-2008

Today 29 October 2008, the Cunard passenger ship QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 is paying another of her final calls in Lisbon.
She crossed the bar at 5h36 and berthed at the Alcântara cruise terminal at about 6h00, to depart this afternoon at 16h00.
QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 sailed from Southampton on 27-10 for a final Mediterranean farewel cruise prior to the delivery voyage to Dubai, with departure from her home port on 11 November and a final call in Lisbon on 13 November.
The QE2 first called in Lisbon on 28 April 1969 on her shakedown cruise. Considered by many the most famous passenger ship of the world, her future seems less than bright as an hotel floating platform in Dubai, as her new owners are enthusiasticaly planing so many changes to the QE2 that she will be almost irrecognisable and probably a shadow of what she is now.
Photo of the QE2 in Lisbon on 3 June 1975, on one of my earliest pictures of the then Cunard flagship still showing the original slim white funnel.

Lançamento do NRP TEJO

COSTA 60 YEARS CRUISING

Images of COSTA MEDITERRANEA in Lisbon 2008-19-22 with "60 years of Costa Cruising" logo displayed on the hull. Costa has not been exactly cruising for 60 years as in fact they have been operating passenger ships since 1948, and they started with liner voyages on the Mediterranean - Lisbon - Brazil Plata run, using the ANNA C, ANDREA C, GIOVANNA C and FRANCA C.
Their most famous liner was the superb EUGENIO C of 1966...

60 ANOS COSTA

Contrastes no Tejo

The superfast cruise ship GRAND VOYAGER slowly cruising the Mediterranean in stormy weather on 9 October 2008. FUNCHAL delivered 47 years ago...

The Portuguese cruise ship FUNCHAL was delivered exactly 47 years ago by the Elsinore Yard to Empresa Insulana de Navegação, at 14h30 on 12 October 1961.
The FUNCHAL was the flagship of Insulana and their best ship on the Atlantic Islands run. Ownership was transferred to CTM in 1974 and in 1985 she was sold to the Great Warwick Co. Inc, her present owners.
Over the years FUNCHAL turned into a classic passenger liner and she is now one of the oldest active passenger ships still operating under the original name and flag.
