PALLAS ATHENA in Lisbon

A magnificent passenger ship photographed in Lisbon on 10 June 1992: the PALLAS ATHENA, former CARLA COSTA, CARLA C, FLANDRE of 1952.

She made several cruises in 1992 under the Panama registry and paid a few calls to Lisbon. She did not return again and was lost by fire in Piraeus in March 1994.

My favourite passenger ships

Photograph of the French Line turbine steamship FLANDRE, a beauty from the 1950s seen here in her original form with North Atlantic French Line black hull. In 1962 she was transferred to the Caribbean service and repainted in white. Then in 1967 she was sold to Costa Line becoming the CARLA C. In 1975 her turbines were replaced by Diesel engines and so she enjoyed a long life cruising for the Italians. In the end she became Epirotiki Lines' PALLAS ATHENA and was destroyed by fire in Piraeus.

WORLD RENAISSANCE in Lisbon 1987-04-08

The Greek cruise liner WORLD RENAISANCE departing from Lisbon in April 1987 on a positioning cruise from the Caribbean to the Mediterranean.
I was particularly interested in this ship and her French origins, as she was built in 1966 at Saint Nazaire for the Paquet group. My favourite Paquet ship was the ANCERVILLE of 1962, but the RENAISSANCE was also nice...
She was in Lisbon again in 2006 as GRAND VICTORIA. Have a look at the post I did at the time clicking here...

NEPTUNE ex-METEOR in Lisbon in 1975

The NEPTUNE looking splendid departing from Lisbon in the Summer of 1975 in one of my earliest photos of Lisbon passenger shipping.
She still had the profile of a Norwegian coastal liner and in fact she had been Bergen line's cruise ship METEOR from 1955 to 1971.

NEPTUNE ex-METEOR in Lisbon

The cruise ship NEPTUNE photographed in Lisbon in 1988 and 1989 after her funnel was modernized.
Epirotiki Lines smaller cruise ships, like the ARGONAUT, NEPTUNE or ORPHEUS were frequent visitors to Lisbon in the 1970s and 1980s, calling usually while operating cruises around Europe under charter, positioning from the Mediterranean to Northern Europe and back home.
Over the years most of their ships visited Lisbon and they were missed as Epirotiki had one of the more remarkable Greek flag cruise ships, with a very smart livery and a wide variety of ships and sizes...

Epirotiki Funnels...

One of the more interesting cruise ship fleets of the past is certainly that of the Greek owned Epirotiki Lines.
Most of their ships were second-hand well converted handsome ships.
Over the years I was able to photograph many of them, and include herewith two funnels taken in the 1980s and asking for the original names of both ships as a trivia...

Cruise ship JUPITER in Venice

The handsome Greek cruise ship JUPITER in Venice, October 1987.
The JUPITER was built in France as the MOLEDET for Zim Lines of Israel. She was sunk outside Piraeus after being hit by the Italian car carrier ADIGE.
