RMS OLYMPIC (1911-1935)

                                                                                            

Aspeto do navio de passageiros inglês RMS OLYMPIC, da companhia White Star Line, o primeiro,  de três navios idênticos construídos em Belfast, OLYMPIC, TITANIC e BRITANNIC.

O OLYMPIC entrou ao serviço em 1911 e navegou durante 24 anos, tendo sido vendido para a sucata em 1935.

Estaleiro Harland & Wolff com o paquete TITANIC na carreira de construção

A Cunard Line destacou-se na carreira Inglaterra - Estados Unidos com a introdução, em 1907, dos famosos transatlânticos LUSITANIA e MAURETANIA, que, com as suas quatro chaminés e perfis icónicos, conquistaram a Flamula Azul, tornando-se os navios de passageiros mais rápidos do mundo, distinção que o MAURETANIA conservou até julho de 1929. 

Sensível à concorrência da Cunard, a empresa rival White Star Line apostou numa filosofia diferente, preterindo a grande velocidade em favor do conforto e das dimensões dos navios futuros, decidindo encomendar os maiores paquetes do mundo. 

Assim, a 17 de setembro de 1908, a White Star encomendou ao estaleiro Harland & Wolff, parceiro de longa data, a construção de dois navios para a linha de Nova Iorque, o OLYMPIC e o TITANIC, que entraram ao serviço em 1911 e 1912.

O TITANIC, que se pode ver na fotografia, na carreira de construção do estaleiro de Belfast, provavelmente em 1911, antes de ser lançado à água a 31 de maio de 1911, ficou tristemente célebre pelo seu naufrágio dramático, a 15 de abril de 1912, durante a viagem inaugural, de Southampton para Nova Iorque.

The last White Star liner

I do not remember seeing White Star Line's famous passenger ship BRITANNIC calling at Lisbon while cruising, but she used to visit Lisbon on her cruises from  New York  as a USD earner after WW2 until her demise in 1960.~It was a time when only the more fortunate could enjoy long luxury cruises, And getting there was half the fun.
Even if in the early nineteen thirties White Star lost its' independence and was amalgamated with Cunard leading to the establishment the Cunard White Star Line, in fact White Star disapeared after their final ship was sold to breakers in late 1960.

CUNARD WHITE STAR cruises

Cunard White Star Cruises' baggage tag depicting White Star's final ship GEORGIC and one of Cunard´s cruising sisters FRANCONIA or CARMANIA in the nineteen thirties, a time when cruising was the real salvation for a significant number of liners without regular work due to the great depression.

As beautiful as the ships themselves was the publicity material, now treasures for collector of passenger ship memorabilia.

Ando com saudades de navegar num paquete pelo Mediterrâneo. Para este cruzeiro promovido pela Raymond and Whitcomb de Nova Iorque utilizando um dos paquetes da White Star Line em 1931 já vou tarde. Para os novos centros coerciais flutuantes não estou com paciência por estes dias. Embarcava no FUNCHAL, no SAVARONA ou no SEA CLOUD com agrado, mas vou ficar mesmo é pelo Tejo até ver.

TITANIC POSCARD

A company post card of the famous and tragic RMS TITANIC written and posted on 11 April 1912: "Ce bateaux est vraiment magnifique" - this ship is really magnificent... A post card signed by Elizabeth. Was she a passenger onboard the doomed liner? Did she reach New York on the CARPATHIA? We'll never know.
