MARCO POLO in Funchal

On 10th January 2013 there were three cruise ships visiting Funchal in Madeira island: the MARCO POLO, the SAGA SAPPHIRE and the BRAEMAR.

MARCO POLO is the older of the three, she started her seafaring life under the Soviet Union merchant fleet as their ALEXANDR PUSHKIN, the second of the five IVAN FRANKO class passenger ships builr in Rostock in 1964 to 1972, also known as the Poets class.

The Pushkin was introduced in 1965 and is the only survivor of that interesting class of passenger liner, although she has been much rebuilt, in Greece for Orient Lines.

MARCO POLO is a nice ship, one of the now very few survivors of the 1960s passenger ships. Although nice she lost her original elegance, the blue and white unimaginative livery foes nothing to make her look classic and elegant.

Esta moderna embarcação de pesca registada no Funchal com o número FN249C poderá assim mudar de proprietário e, quem sabe até de actividade, ser transformada em navio de passageiros, em "cruzeiro", RoRo, enfim que futuro para o magnífico ACIOLINDA do Funchal?

QUEEN ELIZABETH in Funchal

Early morning on 9 January 2013 I took TAP AIR PORTUGAL first flight to Madeira and by 09.30 AM was able to observe the cruise ship QUEEN ELIZABETH underway at sea bound for Funchal. Two hours later she arrived and docked at Pontinha, the port of Funchal main pier, where several other cruise ships were already berthed: Fred. Olsen's BALMORAL and BOUDICCA and Aida Cruises AIDABELLA.

PONTA S. LOURENÇO no Funchal

Durante a minha recente estadia no Funchal a maior parte dos navios a frequentar o porto foram de passageiros em viagens de cruzeiro, com a excepção de um cargueiro português que permaneceu fundeado por fora do molhe da Pontinha: o cimenteiro PONTA S. LOURENÇO, da Transinsular.

Obras no Porto Funchal

Estão a decorrer importantes obras junto à baía do Funchal, as quais incluem a construção de mais um cais de acostagem para navios de cruzeiros, situado imediatamente a leste do antigo Cais da Cidade. A paisagem está a mudar rapidamente e os contornos marítimos da cidade vão ficar muito diferentes. Os trabalhos em curso incluem ainda uma nova Marina e a protecção e regularização da foz das ribeiras locais,  a construção de praias... Aqui fica o registo da obra num conjunto de fotografias tiradas entre 9 e 14 de Janeiro último...

SAGA SAPPHIRE leaving Funchal

Um dos navios mais interessantes do conjunto de paquetes que fotografei na Madeira de 9 a 14 de Janeiro foi o SAGA SAPPHIRE, da Saga Cruises, que fez escala na Ilha a 10 de Janeiro juntamente com o MARCO POLO e o BRAEMAR. Pena que à saída a luz não repetisse o explendor da véspera quando da largada do BALMORAL. Não se pode ter tudo...

One of the more interesting of the group of cruise ships I was able to photograph in Madeira between 9 and 14 January was the SAGA SAPPHIRE ex-EUROPA of 1981. I only wish the light could have been as good as the day before when I photographed BALMORAL...
