NORMANDIE...

Paquebot NORMANDIE

One of the very best passenger liners ever designed and built, French Line's NORMANDIE (1935-1942) was the greatest liner of the 1930s and her loss by fire in New York in February 1942 a sad tragedy that contributed to create a myth.
After WW2 she was replaced by former Norddeutscher Lloyd EUROPA rebuilt as the LIBERTÉ and by the FRANCE in 1962. Probably if the NORMANDIE had been able to survive the war years like the two original Cunard QUEENS, FRANCE would have never been built.

The NORMANDIE in St. Nazaire

The famous French Line flagship NORMANDIE of 1935 photographed in St. Nazaire on the final stage of fitting out.
Her exterior lines were the most elegant and modern of her time, and the ship's interiors were also amazing.
However she was too good for her time and too much modern for the tastes of 1930's average North Atlantic passengers, and so the more conservative and less efficient rival QUEEN MARY of 1936 attracted more passengers...
NORMANDIE is also legendary for her cruises from New York for the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro.

The legendary Paquebot NORMANDIE

Considered by many as the most famous passenger ship ever built, the NORMANDIE of 1935 was one of the largest and fastest passenger liners built before the present days of giant cruise ships.
Here she is seen in a classic view at New York in the late 1930s. The masterpiece of Russian naval architect Yorchevitch, the NORMANDIE had a revolutionary look with her three funnels and streamlined uperworks.
Her career was a short one, from 1935 to September 1939, being caught by WW2 in New York, where she was lost by fire in February 1942 while being converted for trooping duties as USS LAFAYETTE.
