The Norwegian Royal Yacht NORGE in Portugal

The Norwegian Royal Yacht arrived at Cascais, Portugal on 25th May 2008 waiting for His Majesty the King Harald V for a state visit to Portugal on 27 - 29th May.
The NORGE is an extremely beautiful ship, built at Southampton, England by the famous yacht builders Camper & Nicholson's Ltd., to the order of T. Sopwith as the PHILANTE and launched to the water on 17th February 1937.
During WW2 she served in the Royal Navy as an anti-submarine escort and
after the war was purchased by the Norwegian people and offered to the King in 1947 after reconditioning at Southampton as the Royal Yacht NORGE.
She suffered a serious fire on 7th March 1985 but was repaired in order to continue to show the Norwegian flag as the country's Royal Yacht.
The NORGE is operated by the Royal Norwegian Navy (Pennant number N533). With a displacement of 1.786 tons, the 80.2 m long twin screw ship is equiped with 2 Bergen diesel main engines developing 3.520 bhp and attains a service speed of 17 knots.

DANNEBROG - THE ROYAL YACHT OF DANMARK

The beautiful Danish Royal Yacht DANNEBROG photographed in Copenhagen on 19 August 2007 by my good friend Captain Amadeu Albuquerque, master of the Pullmantur cruise ship BLUE MOON. One of the last active Royal Yachts left in Europe, the DANNEBROG was built at the Copenhagen Royal Dockyard in 1931-32 and commissioned on 20 May that year. The 75 m long yacht has a full load displacement of 1.130 tons and is powered by 2 Burmeister & Wain Alpha diesel engines with the total output of 1.800 bhp. These engines were fitted in 1981 during a refit. A twin screw ship, the DANNEBROG can achieve a speed of 14 knots. She has a normal complement of 55 officers and crew. I saw the DANNEBROG in Lisbon in 1998 during the EXPO98, and she really is a gem. Thanks to Captain Albuquerque for sending the image.
