The Dutch owned cruise ship VAN GOGH is detained under arrest at Funchal, Madeira since April 2nd. The arrest is due to claims for payment of debts made earlier by former charterer and operator of the ship, the Travelscope Holidays, a company that went bankrupt in 2007.
The VAN GOGH was doing the final leg of a world cruise with 430 passengers and was schedulled to sail for Falmouth yesterday.
Following the closing of TRAVELSCOPE, the Dutch owners of the VAN GOGH, Club Cruise decided to continue operating the ship out of the U.K. under the banner of VAN GOGH Cruises. However problems with the Travelscope affair led the new company to cancel all VAN GOGH U.K. cruises until November 2008. Following the present World cruise, the vAN GOGH will be refitted and upgraded to cope with SOLAS 2010.
