When so many classic older passenger ships have no other way to go rather than the breaker's yard, it is reassuring to see the FUNCHAL of 1961 being refited in Lisbon for continued service after 2010.
The veteran of the Classic International Cruises' fleet and their first ship purchased in August 1985, FUNCHAL has been in Lisbon since 12 October 2008 and is beng refited berthed at Santa Apolónia near a container terminal.
On the exterior side, the main diference observed is the recent removal, in February, of the two cargo masts ans respective booms that used to serve holds nº 1 and 2. This in order to create extra deck space and an observation site looking towards the bow for passengers and also to improve the clean classic lines of the FUNCHAL.
She returns to service next April for a series of cruises from Lisbon geared to the Portuguese market. Photographs taken on 23 February 2009.

Vão a leilão?
