The first Lisbon cruise ship call in 2009 was done by the SAGA RUBY which docked at the Alcântara cruise terminal on 2 January 2009 on the final leg of her New Year's cruise.
Thirty three years ago on 3 January 1976 I did photograph the same ship at the same terminal also on a Christmas & New Year cruise but in her original form as the then brand new VISTAFJORD of Norwegian America Line. (See photo on a post below).
The SAGA RUBY is the first of 100 different ships scheduled to do 300 calls in Lisbon in 2009. Two of those ships will be doing the final season due to SOLAS 2010, the SAGA ROSE and BLACK PRINCE.
A newcomer to Lisbon in 2009 will be the ATLANTIC STAR ex SKY WONDER of Pullmantur which will be based in Lisbon on 5 April 2009 for 7-day cruises to Gibraltar, Casablanca, Agadir, Lanzarote and Funchal, with Sunday departures from Lisbon, on what seems to be an effort to develop the Portuguese cruise market and shall result in further competition from the Royal Caribbean group against Classic International Cruises.
