The amazing port of Funchal with cruise ships on 31 December 2006. The cruising and tourist traditions of the Port of Funchal go back to the 1830s when the steamer WILLIAM FAWCETT started calling in the Fall and Spring from U.K. and Lisbon conveying POSH Britons of the early Victorian period away from the English winter. An that even before the establishment of the Peninsular Steamship Company in September 1837 following the award of P&O's first mail contract. We really can say cruising really started here in this beautiful bay of Funchal more than 180 years ago...

Na foto superior são visíveis os navios seguintes: fundeados, o VAN GOGH ex GRUZHIYA e o ATHENA ex-ITALIA PRIMA; atracados ao molhe da Pontinha, de leste para oeste, os paquetes ORIANA, AIDAblu, THOMSON DESTINY e LOBO MARINHO.

A segunda foto já faz parte da história... O Independência, o Cabo Girão, o Ponta do Garajau e as gruas do Terminal Norte.
E por falar em Independência... Alguém sabe o seu destino depois da reparação? Para onde irá?
Não sei exactamente qual o destino do INDEPENDÊNCIA, mas não me admirava se fosse revendido depois de reparado, com uma vais valia interessante que a APRAM não conseguiu obter.
