EUROPA in Lisbon 2007-06-05

The Hapag-Lloyd flagship EUROPA visited Lisbon on 5 June 2007 on yet another cruise around Europe bound for Bremerhaven and her summer base. It is the third German cruise ship named EUROPA that I have been able to photograph since 1975 when I started taking photographs seriously.

BOUDICCA IN LISBON 2007-06-01

The Fred Olsen cruise ship BOUDICCA visited Lisbon on 2007-06-01 again and I was able to register some more images of her taken on her departure from the Rocha Cruise Terminal. Originally built in Helsinki by Wartsila for the Royal Viking Line (the second of three sisters) as the ROYAL VIKING SKY, she is now sailing under her seventh name and joined her older sister ship BLACK WATCH ex-ROYAL VIKING STAR in 2005. Following a very extensive refit that included new main engines the BOUDICCA is now based in UK as one of the four soon to be five Fred Olsen cruise ships.

POLÍTICA DO MAR de D. FERNANDO I

DALMACIJA in Lisbon 17-05-2007

The Croatian cruise ship DALMACIJA returned to Lisbon on 17 May 2007 after many years away cruising in the Mediterranean or laid up. This ship and her former sister ISTRA were frequent visitors to Lisbon in the seventies and eighties while chartered to German travel operators. They used to visit Lisbon on their positioning cruises around Europe. In 1999 the ISTRA was purchased by Lisbon-based Classic International Cruises and rebuilt in Lisbon as the ARION.

SAIL TRAINING IN JAPAN

BY HOKUTO MATSUMURA, THE ASAHI SHIMBUNT
The modern age has finally caught up with two graceful sailing ships used to train prospective ocean-faring officers.

photoThe Nippon Maru, left, and the Kaiwo Maru at Nagasaki Port on April 28 (Tadashi Mizowaki/ The Asahi Shimbun)

The Nippon Maru and Kaiwo Maru, two sailing ships that belong to the Yokohama-based National Institute for Sea Training, will take on a new role in raising interest in the sea and shipping among the nation's youth.
Next year, the transport ministry will halt the exercises aboard the vessels that trainees must take to earn government certification for officer status.
A ministry ordinance stipulates that the required 12-month onboard training for officer qualification for international routes, ocean training must be done on sail-equipped ships.
The Nippon Maru and Kaiwo Maru sail between Japan and Hawaii or the U.S. West coast for up to six months as part of the training given to students or new graduates of mercantile colleges and other institutions.
Teamwork among crew members is essential to operate a sailing ship. Special attention must also be paid to wind, currents and the weather.
Training on such ships "nurtures cooperation and leadership," said Toshio Iida, head of education at the institute.
But officials of shipping firms have urged that the requirement be dropped, on the grounds that learning how to sail does not meet today's modern shipping needs.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will, therefore, revise its ordinance this fiscal year to allow ocean-faring training onboard engine-powered ships of the training institute or aboard vessels owned by shipping firms that meet training standards.
The ministry, however, plans to continue using the sailing ships for short training voyages in Japanese waters.
At the same time, the ministry plans to promote interest in the sea and ships among the public by using the tall-masted ships. The aim is to have young people interested in a career in shipping take day trips on the rigged vessels and learn what it is like to work and sail on such majestic ships.(IHT/Asahi: May 28,2007)

DOUGH NEWMAN vintage passenger ships

Dough Newman has published (At Maritime matters...) a very interesting and accurate list of all existing passenger ships built in 1977 or before, including Classic International Cruises ships and many others, like the SAGA sisters I photographed recently in Lisbon...

EXPRESS SANTORINI IN LISBON

The Greek passenger RoRo ferry EXPRESS SANTORINI arrived Lisbon yesterday 24 May 2007 to start her ATLÂNTICO LINE summer charter in the Azores inter-islands ferry service. The EXPRESS SANTORINI arrived early in the morning and docked at the Alcântara dock at the same berth used in the sities and early seventies by the old Empresa Insulana passenger liners FUNCHAL and ANGRA DO HEROÍSMO.
The EXPRESS SANTORINI will now be submitted to Port State Control and The Portuguese Shipping Board (IPTM) inspections prior to a positioning voyage to the Azores e early June. In the Azores the Greek ferry is going to operate as a running mate to the ILHA AZUL that has already started the 2007 ferry season chartered by ATLÂNTICO LINE from her owners TRANSMAÇOR.
Prior to this charter, the EXPRESS SANTORINI was fitted with a new Portside side door that will enable her to operate in the Azores ports. The EXPRESS SANTORINI was built in 1974 at Nantes, France, as the CHARTRES for French Railways SNCF to operate between Calais / Bologne and Dover /Folkestone. In 1992 she was chartered by the French Government for use as a transport associated with the first Gulf War and in 1993 she was sold to Greek interests and renamed EXPRESS SANTORINI. She is 115.4 m long has 4.590 GT and can take 1737 Pax, 280 cars and 9 lorries. Although built 33 years ago, she is still a fine ship and probably the best ferry to operate in the Azores so far.
ATLÂNTICO LINE has ordered a new fleet of Passenger Ferries to be built by VIANAYARDS and introduced in 2008.

MANUEL ALEGRE POETA DO MAR

país a passar

Poema de Manuel Alegre escrito a 17-05-2006, in Doze Naus, edição Publicações D. Quixote, 2007
