The Portuguese passenger liner ANGRA DO HEROÍSMO (1966-1974) photographed arriving Leixões, the main port for Oporto, dressed overall for a cruise to the Atlantic Isles.
Built in Hamburg in 1955 for Zim Lines as the ISRAEL, she operated on the Haifa - New York service until sold to Empresa Insulana de Navegação in April 1966. Her career under the Portuguese flag was a short one and she was scrapped in Spain in 1974. It was very sad to see her interior fittings being taken from the ship and then see her one final time departing the river Tagus on 4 April 1974 on tow, a dead and sad ship. Her sister ZION was more fortunate for she was converted to full cruise ship status and lasted about 50 years.
