Farewell to THE OCEANIC

THE OCEANIC berthed at Piraeus on 28 March 2012 on her final world cruise for the Japanese organization Peace Boat.
Built in Italy in 1965 for Home Lines the OCEANIC has been a very successful passenger ship ever since, butis now running out of the old beauty and a sale to be broken up is now expected after she is replaced by OCEAN DREAM on 25 April.
A group of former crew members and staff of Home Lines met onboard the OCEANIC at Piraeus, including Greek shipowner Pericles Panagopoulos who worked for Home Lines before setting up Royal Cruise Line.

Sad to see the last of the great Italian liners going, this if it happens, will truly be the end of an era.

I was hoping that this ship would become a floating hotel like the SS Rotterdam within a few short years. But the sudden rise in oil prices is what caused Peace Boat to cancel its charter with the Oceanic. This is a ship that deserves to avoid the scrapyard like the SS Rotterdam. Imagine if Peace Boat had obtained the SS Rotterdam?
