O REGRESSO DO THOR VI

Cameron humiliates First Sea Lord

Cameron humiliates first sea lord over Libya in Commons

Article by Nick Hopkins / The Guardian - London Photo by John Stillwell / P.A.
Prime minister tells MPs he summoned Sir Mark Stanhope to No 10 to challenge his claims about difficulties in Libyan campaign
Britain's chief naval officer has been left humiliated after David Cameron said he had summoned him to Downing Street to challenge his claims that the fleet could not continue the Libya campaign indefinitely without affecting other naval operations.
The prime minister told MPs he had met Sir Mark Stanhope, and that the first sea lord now agreed that the navy would be able to "sustain this mission as long as we need to".

The meeting was the culmination of a turbulent 24 hours for Stanhope, who infuriated No 10 by talking about the strains on the navy, which is heavily involved in the Afghanistan mission as well as in Libya.
In a briefing on Monday, Stanhope said ministers would have to "make challenging decisions" once Nato's 90-day extension to the Libya campaign ended.
"Beyond that we might have to request the government to make some challenging decisions about priorities," he said. "There are different ways of doing this. It's not simply about giving up standing commitments. We will have to rebalance."
He said a ship might have to be diverted from "around home waters".
His remarks provoked uproar at No 10, which regarded them as a PR gift to the Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi, as well as misrepresenting the state of the service. But serving staff privately rallied to him, and former officers provided public support, saying Stanhope was only stating the obvious, especially now the navy has axed ships and thousands of personnel as part of the government's strategic defence and security review (SDSR).
Cameron's announcement is only likely to cause more rancour, although the Ministry of Defence has informally issued an order to stop officers briefing the press to try to prevent the government being embarrassed further.
At prime minister's questions, Cameron said: "I had a meeting with the first sea lord yesterday and he agreed that we can sustain this mission as long as we need to. We are doing the right thing and I want one simple message to go out from every part of this government, and indeed every part of this House of Commons, and that is that time is on our side. The pressure is building, militarily, diplomatically and politically and time is running out for Gaddafi."
The Press Association cited an anonymous Whitehall source who said of Cameron's meeting with Stanhope: "I think you can assume that there was no coffee or biscuits."
In contrast, military sources said the meeting had been cordial, and that Cameron had accepted that Stanhope had been misquoted by some newspapers which claimed the navy was at breaking point.
Retired rear admiral Chris Parry said the prime minister was perfectly entitled to speak to Stanhope and that he hoped the two had had "a frank exchange of views over exactly what was said and by whom.
"But it was unfortunate that Mr Cameron chose to give his version of the discussion in the way he did at prime minister's questions. I would think that the Royal Navy will, rightly, be rallying around the first sea lord."
Another Whitehall insider said: "The first sea lord is a senior official and he deserves to be treated with respect. He shouldn't be dragged into politics in this way."
The row has overshadowed the navy's genuine difficulty about how it juggles its remaining warships, and which of them will be sent to Libya.
The Guardian undertands the navy's problems centre around the its remaining 19 frigates – four Type 22 destroyers were axed as part of the SDSR.
They are all committed to operations, but have been particularly useful in the Mediterranean because of their sophisticated listening and surveillance equipment.

ARTANIA ex-ARTEMIS in Rotterdam

When introduced in 1984 as the ROYAL PRINCESS, this ship was the last word in cruise ship design. She was Princess Cruises first brand new ship and later she saw service under the livery of P&O Cruises as ARTEMIS.
She was delivered in April to Phoenix Reisen, Germany and after a refit she is now cruising as ARTANIA.

HANSEATIC in HAPAG-LLOYD colours

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has decided to unify the colours carried by all members of its fleet. After a 13-day stay at Hamburg’s famous Blohm & Voss shipyard, the Hanseatic has re-appeared in Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ distinctive colours, an orange and blue band, as well as the orange funnel with the cruise line logo. Her comprehensive drydocking included more than 780 items, among them, the renovation and modernisation of two decks of cabins, the buffet restaurant, and the sauna and pool area. The ship returned to service today.
“With the charter contract for the Hanseatic extended until 2018, we opted to add the visual unification of the fleet. Nevertheless, the legendary former logo of the Hanseatic will be retained as a product logo on board“, said Sebastian Ahrens, Managing Director of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. Until now, the expedition ship Hanseatic had carried the colours of the former North Atlantic liner of the same name, which had operated for the German Atlantic Line.
More than 400 shipyard workers in three shifts carried out the modernisation, which included substantial renovation of cabins on Decks 5 and 6. Plenty of wood, new fabrics, furniture and carpeting help to create a warm atmosphere, and now present a contemporary design for the Hanseatic . The Columbus Lounge buffet restaurant also features a new color design and has been renamed the “Bistro Lemaire.” Further items included the modernisation of the pool and sauna, with a new steam sauna, as well as a multi-mode shower. More than 11,482 sq ft of carpet, 621 gallons of paint and 3,937 sq ft of fabric were used in these renovations.
New service options now available on the Hanseatic include worldwide mobile telephone reception via OnAir, Wi-Fi in all cabins, an extended selection of international newspapers in full editions, as well as headsets for passengers during the excursions for better clarity for the experts to be heard.
Shining in her new splendour, the Hanseatic set sail today on a four-day cruise from Hamburg via List (Sylt) and Binz (Ruegen) to Travemuende on the Baltic.

CANBERRA in Lisbon

Back in 1975 P&O's CANBERRA was the largest passenger ship calling  regularly on her multiple cruises from Southampton.
With ORIANA she seemed to be the last of her kind.
By then she was large and needed several tugs to assist  her docking manoeuvres...
On the first photo another classic steam turbine passenger ship can be seen: Polish Ocean Lines' flagship STEFAN BATORY ex- MAASDAM.

BRITANIS arriving Miami

BRITANIS arriving Miami early in the morning in late May 1989.
At the time she was already a 57 year-old passenger ship in her fourth name: she was built for Matson Lines in 1932 as MONTEREY (1932-1957). She had a secons career under the Matson flag as MATSONIA (1957-1963) becoming LURLINE (1963-1970)after her sister was sold to Chandris as ELLINIS. She entered service for Chandris on the Southampton - Australia route in 1971 and was probably the most successful of all Chandris liners, ending her career in 1974 with a charter in Guantanamo Bay. Lay up in Tampa followed until in 1998 she became BELOFIN-1. Proposals to preserve were not acomplished and she sunk at sea off South Africa in October 2000 on her way to Alang.

Classic ladies in Miami

Classic ladies in Miami, a long time ago...
The BRITANIS is arriving while CARNIVALE is already alongside her berth. BRITANIS was one of the famous Chandris liners purchased from Matson Lines for the Australia service, later switching for full time cruising. CARNIVALE was Carnival Cruise Lines second ship, purchased in 1975 in Greece.

CRISTOFO COLOMBO in Lisbon

Thanks to this black & white photo of CRISTOFORO COLOMBO I know exactly were I was on 6 October 1975: taking this picture from the veranda of the Rocha passenger terminal. It was  alate morning arrival and the light was not very good but the white lady looked at her best as always... By then I would not miss her calls in Lisbon and so was able to take many phoos of her last voyages. She was taken out of service in April 1977.
