O Porto do Café.
Vale a pena conferir esses vídeos amadores.

APITOS DE DESPEDIDA
ZENITH at Santos

Three attractive shots of Pullmantur cruise ship ZENITH photographed at Santos, Brazil, on 31 January 2009.In a blue and white world on what concerns many cruise ship liveries, it is refreshing to see the current Pullmantur red.

OCEANIC sold to Japanese interests
Pullmantur Cruises has just sold their cruise ship OCEANIC to Japanese interests associated to the Peace Boat organization. The Valencia operation of 2 and 5 night cruises due to start on 3 April and run until 18 September has been canceled and the ship is due to be delivered in April. She is being destored at this moment in Barcelona.
It was feared that following the scheduled withdrawal of OCEANIC from Pullmantur service in September 2009 she might be sold for scrap, but this lucky Italian-built Lady has just found another useful operation cruising around the world for the Japanese PEACE BOAT organization.
What a wonderful new lease of life for the luckiest of all the great liners of the 1960s...

ANGRA DO HEROÍSMO in Oporto
The Portuguese passenger liner ANGRA DO HEROÍSMO (1966-1974) photographed arriving Leixões, the main port for Oporto, dressed overall for a cruise to the Atlantic Isles.
Built in Hamburg in 1955 for Zim Lines as the ISRAEL, she operated on the Haifa - New York service until sold to Empresa Insulana de Navegação in April 1966. Her career under the Portuguese flag was a short one and she was scrapped in Spain in 1974. It was very sad to see her interior fittings being taken from the ship and then see her one final time departing the river Tagus on 4 April 1974 on tow, a dead and sad ship. Her sister ZION was more fortunate for she was converted to full cruise ship status and lasted about 50 years.
Photo kindly sent by Mr Nuno Bartolomeu.

SANTA MARIA in Lisbon 24 April 1955
Portuguese passenger liner SANTA MARIA about to depart to Central and South America on 24 April 1955. She was Companhia Colonial most modern passenger liner, having started her maiden voyage in November 1953 and is shown in the photograph berthed at the Rocha do Conde de Óbidos passenger ship terminal, a modern facility inaugurated in 1948. The smoke is from the Italian Line CONTE GRANDE, also in port.
Photograph kindly sent by Cai Ronnaü.
The SANTA MARIA was one of my favorite Portuguese Liners, and the first ship I remember being onboard as passenger, in April 1961, when I sailed on her on the ship-s first voyage after the hijack incident the previous January. I was 4 years old at the time and remember well her interiors and the trip.

For other posts and images, check our archive at the right column of the main page. Navio FERNCAPE

A Companhia Colonial adquiriu o BAILUNDO e a Sociedade Geral o navio gémeo CUNENE.

SPANISH MAILSHIPS

Two photos of the TRASMEDITERRANEA mailship CIUDAD DE BADAJOZ arriving at Palma de Mallorca on 10 June 1991, still in the company's original livery. Note the signals mast above the bridge showing the influence from the design of the mast of QUEEN ELIZABETH 2.
Spanish passenger ships were very interesting and those classed as mailships had a special national ensign with the letters C M meaning Correo Maritimo - Sea Mail. This flag is still in use.
The history and fate of this particular ship, built in Valencia in 1979 can be seen here. She was broken up in 2008 but her demise passed almost unnoticed.

FUNCHAL undergoing SOLAS refit
When so many classic older passenger ships have no other way to go rather than the breaker's yard, it is reassuring to see the FUNCHAL of 1961 being refited in Lisbon for continued service after 2010.
The veteran of the Classic International Cruises' fleet and their first ship purchased in August 1985, FUNCHAL has been in Lisbon since 12 October 2008 and is beng refited berthed at Santa Apolónia near a container terminal.
On the exterior side, the main diference observed is the recent removal, in February, of the two cargo masts ans respective booms that used to serve holds nº 1 and 2. This in order to create extra deck space and an observation site looking towards the bow for passengers and also to improve the clean classic lines of the FUNCHAL.
She returns to service next April for a series of cruises from Lisbon geared to the Portuguese market. Photographs taken on 23 February 2009.

HMRY BRITANNIA in Lisbon

The Royal Yacht BRITANNIA visited Lisbon at least three times, the first in the 1950s and the final one in 1991.
These photographs show the famous BRITANNIA berthed at the Rocha Passenger Ship terminal, Lisbon, on 13 June 1991 and were taken from the decks of the cruise ship VASCO DA GAMA ex-INFANTE DOM HENRIQUE, on the arrival following her final cruise from Lisbon.
The BRITANNIA was constructed in the Clydebank yards of Messrs John Brown, the same builders of the famous first three Cunard QUEENS and countless other ships and served as Royal Yacht between 1954 and 1997. She was preserved and serves now as a museum ship in Leith, Scotland, since October 1998.These photographs show the famous BRITANNIA berthed at the Rocha Passenger Ship terminal, Lisbon, on 13 June 1991 and were taken from the decks of the cruise ship VASCO DA GAMA ex-INFANTE DOM HENRIQUE, on the arrival following her final cruise from Lisbon.

MAXIM GORKIY off the beach...
The MAXIM GORKIY is the next passenger ship to be beached at Alang the next coming days. She is just waiting for the right tide for that final full speed ahead ride into the sands of Alang.
What a shame nobody in Hamburg could succeed with the project to preserve the ship as a living museum and hotel under the original name of HAMBURG.
I am really sad with this situation. I enjoyed so much this magnificent final passenger liner and cruise ship of the 1960s I first saw in Lisbon in May 1969 on her maiden cruise.
In the photo published with this post the HAMBURG is seen on her final call in Lisbon, docking at Alcântara terminal on 25 May 2008, 39 years later and following so many pictures over the years. More photos and information in our HAMBURG / MAXIM GORKIY blog here.

Battleship USS MISSOURI in Lisbon 1986

The battleship USS MISOURI photographed at anchor in Lisbon on 25 November 1986 while on a visit to the Portuguese Capital City and port.

Port of Funchal 31-12-2006

The amazing port of Funchal with cruise ships on 31 December 2006. The cruising and tourist traditions of the Port of Funchal go back to the 1830s when the steamer WILLIAM FAWCETT started calling in the Fall and Spring from U.K. and Lisbon conveying POSH Britons of the early Victorian period away from the English winter. An that even before the establishment of the Peninsular Steamship Company in September 1837 following the award of P&O's first mail contract. We really can say cruising really started here in this beautiful bay of Funchal more than 180 years ago...

Those two images of the AIDAblu were taken on 31 December 2006...
